RYAINAIR Flights - cancellation, name change fee??

Hello, if anyone could help me here that would be great.
My family are going to Italy in 2 weeks, but unfortunately my partner has fallen seriously ill and can't come - another family member is going to take place but to change the name they are charging £100!!!!!!!!! This is extortionate!
I've rung them and tried to say we put a wrong name on the booking by mistake but they said we'd still have to pay £100 - he wasn't very happy/helpful.
Do Ryanair allow you to cancel flights?? (I could use the refund money to re-book) or does anyone have any ideas of excuses I could use that would help them be understanding and lower the charge?? Do you think if I ring back I might get a nicer person who would lower it for me?!?!?!
Any advice greatly appreciated!!!

probably cheaper to forget about that booking and book a flight from scratch. You should be able to claim back the airport taxes on the unused tickets...don't know of any way round this..it is in place to stop people buying up all the 1p flights and selling them on for a big profit - as you have found a name change makes it north worth it0

They do it to stop people buying up all of the very cheap sale tickets and selling them on.0

Yeah...the only problem now is the flights have gone up and now cost £185...and that's without baggage fee etc...so it wouldn't work out cheaper really.
I'ss phone again and try my luck with another advisor!!0 -
I think you are wasting your time trying to get a different employee as that is Ryanair's standard fee for a name change.0

Yeah, I appreciate that. Although it seems absurd in a situation like this (partner will be in hospital for over a fortnight) that a company can't have any compassion and work with you..plenty of other companies would.0

they are likely to point you towards your travel insurance0

Tis how they make money.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

You could go without your partner.0

This is the downside of booking Ryanair, cheap headline fares but they hammer you for everything else. It sounds like your only option is to pay them £100 for pressing a few keys on their computer.0

You're lucky Ryanair let you change a name at all. Most airlines will not allow any changes- regardless of the situation.
The reason? To stop people buying cheap tickets and then selling them on0
