How about something like "those just came in yesterday" or some comment about the popularity of the item the customer is looking at. I've heard that from other shop assistants.

I agree with you though. Clearly this company wants you to engage in conversation with every customer but customers don't always want to chat.

I think the problem is these companies believe customers are so easily manipulated into buying additional items and that they are not savvy enough to say no. e.g. argos system always hs an alert about leads/batteries/extra cover etc

Well, er, no, can get leads of ebay, battieries are cheaper next door and your extra cover doesn't mean anything as i'm already covered by the sales of goods act thanks
I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!

I'm not absolutely certain but I was under the impression that you can only Self Assign 5 jobs. If they allocate extra to you that should be fine.

Maximum of 10 this wave according to brief. I emailed them for one more which was in the same area, and never heard back.

strange my notes say 5 but if u can do 10 in one day more power to you lol

EDIT: No I see 10 now, but they all have to be done on the 3rd.. and since i live in the sticks to get to 10 in 8 hours plus do reports would be a bit hard.

We had to have a meeting about it yesterday and engage in role playing (joy of joys!). We all, without fail, think it is ridiculous. It is pages and pages of things we should and should not so and things we should do...

Customers are going to think we are crazy.

For every 'crazy customer' that won't respond to a friendly conversation there will be at least five that will. Likewise for every savvy customer there will be probably ten that aren't!

Retail companies spend millions on research into proven sales techniques and some of the techniques and proceedures they ask you to adopt may sound ridiculous and long winded but they have shown to work. If they didn't they wouldn't spend money on training. Their staff that embrace it will end up selling more and progressing through to a more lucrative salary and career prospects.

Personally I would would much rather be approached by an assistant who is open to conversation and interested in serving me that someone who can't be arsed. I often forget I have loyalty card (there are so many of them in my bag) so am pleased when I am reminded.

A sales assistant shouldn't feel ridiculous or embarrased about approaching a customer with a friendly comment and suggesting extra items. I rather think it's customers that should be more receptive and pleasant. Some people are just so rude and they may find it intrusive but I reckon the majority of us appreciate good service and helpful staff.

If none of the sales techniques worked then they wouldn't bother with the training and research....and then we MSers wouldn't have a job either!

I have been thinking about this and if you had noticed when you got it you could have asked if it was a new type of meal package - "A Gap Buster" :rotfl:
Maybe you could say that if it happened again.

:rotfl::rotfl: Perhaps I should ring the outlet and say "just looked at the receipt and its states I should have received a free Gap Buster, it wasn't in the bag can I collect it the next time I call?!

and preferably record the call so we can all listen to it lol

My hubby keeps threatening to ask for a Gap-mac as he's usually getting his meal inside if I do a drive thru and hears them yell 'Gap-mac' when I order :rotfl:

Well you say that, but having actually sold the stuff, I'd say it's sometimes worth it. You certainly need to consider all the elements (cost of item, cost of cover, likely lifetime of item, how might you break the item, and so on) but sometimes it's worth it. All the sale of goods act covers (from the perspective of a retailer rather than lawyer here) is breakdown within a reasonable lifetime that isn't a result of standard wear and tear that might lead to that. Now with replacement cover where I worked, if someone came in with a broken £200 lawnmower 2.5 years after they purchased where they had obviously thrown it down the stairs or whatever, we would replace it.
