I work for a shop that has recently changed its mystery shop company. The new company have come up with a new strategy for shop assistants to use which is supposed to encourage customers to buy and spend more than normal.
We had to have a meeting about it yesterday and engage in role playing (joy of joys!). We all, without fail, think it is ridiculous. It is pages and pages of things we should and should not so and things we should do.
We should go up to customers and mirror their body image! Only ever stand side on to them (what about eye contact then?) and never ever under any circumstances say "can I help you" or "do you need any help" or any question that they can answer no to! If we ask that when we are mystery shopped we will lose points. We are supposed to start the conversation with a remark which they can only agree with such as "aren't we having lovely sunny weather". Now I am sorry but if I were in shop wanting help I would not want to have a conversation about the weather. Customers are going to think we are crazy.
Also asking if they have a loyalty card is a big no no and losses points. We should say something like "I don't know if you know but we have a loyalty card which enables you to gain points and save money on future purchases, if you already have one I can put the points on today for your purchase". What the!!!!! Imagine serving 20 people in a row and coming out with that mouthful. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
Mirroring body language makes you appear more open and friendly.
Starting a conversation with an open question is better than asking if someone needs help. If you just say "do you need help?" the customer can easily say "no" and walk off. If you ask an open question or comment on the weather etc., you're more likely to engage in a conversation as the customer will usually give a more detailed response back. Once you are in a conversation, it's easier to sell to people. Here I go again on my own....0 -

Hi, With Egg jobs, can someone tell me it says you can only accept 5 ive been called by esa today and allocated 9. but im thinking i best go down to the 5.. what does it mean 5 per wave is that per month?
I'm not absolutely certain but I was under the impression that you can only Self Assign 5 jobs. If they allocate extra to you that should be fine.ELITE 5:2

How about something like "those just came in yesterday" or some comment about the popularity of the item the customer is looking at. I've heard that from other shop assistants.
I agree with you though. Clearly this company wants you to engage in conversation with every customer but customers don't always want to chat.Total debt 11/1/2011 €5350.65Total debt 12/12/12 €3222.31CrazyClothesChallenge 2013 #006 €34.08/€5000
