Hotel is trying to charge for Breakfast after we have checkout?

Your letter is still has a bolshy attitude to it and just so we are clear you didn't book self catering then?
We have taken advise to make our letter brief and concise, with no he said she said.
We booked self catering, and they sent back confirmation that breakfast was included ???? so we went to breakfast.........0 -
It seems clear that the hotel has meant that the first breakfast could be honoured but not the other 2, the OP has assumed they meant the other 2 as well. Simple mix up through lack of communication. Why not offer to meet the halfway on the bill?, you'd still only be paying for 1 lot of breakfasts when you've had 3.
It seems clear now that they are asking for the money, but I bet it wasn't made completely clear at the time. Unless he specified only one breakfast then it's the manager's fault and the company should foot the bill. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0 -

We feel that we would rather do this if this first letter doesn't work, the only sad thing is the letter they sent us was so horrid and hurtful, we dont want them getting away with it.0 -
That letter is a lot better and seems ok to me.
I wouldn't offer to meet them half way. This will surely only encourage them to chase people in future for costs that are already covered as per their confirmation. They must be that sort of business otherwise they would take the view that it's their error and their loss.
If this went all the way to court, they would say you had breakfast when you are not entitled to it. At which point you produce written evidence from them in their confirmation that states you were entitled to breakfast in the price you paid. Their defence can only be along the lines of "but we said they couldn't have breakfast" which can obviously be disputed by you.
In short the evidence says you were entitled to breakfast and that's what you had.
If hotels were allowed to carry on like this then how would any of us know what we are due to pay when we get there? The confirmation is what we all rely on.0 -
I also think you shouldn't have to pay for any of the three breakfasts. If they said they would honour the confirmation and the confirmation says breakfast is included then I would have understood that to mean all three mornings.
Hotels have all sorts of offers on so it's not unusual to be offered breakfast on a self catering holiday.0 -

That's the critical point. They said they would honour the confirmation. They should do so! They can't change their mind after the fact.Hotels have all sorts of offers on so it's not unusual to be offered breakfast on a self catering holiday.
Self-catering is a strange term usually only applied to package holiday deals.
Most hotels usually offer either 'Room Only' or 'Bed and Breakfast'.0 -

My point exactly, from looking on this hotel's website they seem to be marketing themselves as something inbetween the typical idea of a hotel and of self catering apartments
"Headland Cottages are unique; here you can enjoy the space and freedom of luxury self-catering cottages with all the trimmings of a four-star hotel at your fingertips. "
I have a friend who regularly visits something similar (timeshare in the lakes) sometimes there's various things included in the stay- meals, treatments etc so if I'd received the confirmation the OP had, then I wouldn't have thought it was anything other than genuine.
Personally I think the whole problem stems from the hotel not being clear about the booking, and therefore the hotel should cover the cost.0 -
Hello,
Just a quick thought (I might have misunderstood your posts), but you mention you booked self-catering accommodation initially. How did you book this, over the telephone/email/online? If you booked via telephone then you might have a chance of not paying, as you could contest it in that maybe they said 'including breakfast' to you. However, if you booked online, and you yourself chose self catering, does the 'contract' not start from then? Not too sure on the legal bit, sorry!0 -
hey,
i had a similar thing happen to me in the autumn about wrong confirmations being sent out. i was staying down in the new forest with my man in a self catering wooden cabin complex, we booked the accommodation online but the company confirmed 'all meals included' in the email - which we werent expecting and thought we just got lucky!
on the first evening we went to dinner and my boyfriend showed them the confirmation we had been sent, but their computer system didnt let us in. we kicked off a little bit and showed them the email print out, the manger took us to reception where we were given a print out of our selections we made online which showed 'no meals included' and that is the bit that matters - we went to CAB with this and they told us we couldnt do anything as we had paid for no meals and that was what our contract said. we were a bit gutted but still had a good holiday :-)
good luck - did you book online like us? if it was over the phone you could argue what the contract was and create some confusion in the hope to get a 50:50 here.0
