And breathe ..................................................!!!!!
What other sources apart from fleabay and ebuyer have you tried?
Local shop adverts, Free Ads, Freecycle, Local newspapers, Independent small traders, local markets, charity shops, friends and family?
Is there anyone you could borrow one from - or a local group/library/organisation to approach? Is anyone you know thinking of updating one?
Don't worry - you WILL get one. It's not worth getting too stressed.
Incidentally, does your television have freeview built in or do you have a separate freeview box? The dvd recorder I have is quite old and doesn't have a tv tuner. It works fine recording from a television with a separate freeview box but I have recently discovered that for televisions with built-in freeview it will ONLY record the program as long as I keep the tv switched on, which is pretty useless! So, I think you need to make sure that you get one with a tv tuner.
(If you have a separate digibox at the moment and are mainly concerned with recording your vhs tapes it might be worth considering getting an older dvd hdd recorder - whilst you wait-. These should be alot cheaper as most people will be after ones with freeview. Then when you've catalogued all your videos you can concentrate on getting a more up-to-date one for your tv viewing).

I picked up a model like this one
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Toshiba-RD-XV48-RDXV48-160GB-HDD-DVD-Recorder-VHS-/230462535429?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_Video_DVDPlayers_Recorders&hash=item35a8a33705
(same model, not from that seller)
It has a VCR, a Hard disk and DVD recorder.
You can one touch copy a VHS straight to DVD, or copy it from VHS to the hard drive, edit bits out then copy to dvd.[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that[/redtitle](house of lords debate, talking about Cameron)0 -
I'm researching the ones i've found and some of the more expensive ones have more issues than the cheap ones!
Too late now!! I've already bought it!!
You should have researched it earlier for me!
Joking aside, it's a Panasonic (I forget the model number, but it had the biggest HDD) and we're very pleased with it. It's works perfectly in all other respects

:rotfl:I went to bed thinking of DVD players and woke up thinking of them
Spent far many too hours on this.
I've only checked eBay and eBuyer - a bit of Amazon - I think i'd like some kind of warranty for piece of mind.
I've looked in a local shop (outside of the internet) but not what I want. I think i'm going to have to pay well for something decent, which is ok, but would like that warranty. Must be able to burn dual layer DVD's as don't want to compromise my 4 hour VHS into a 2 hour DVD with quality loss.
I have Sky TV - where i'm putting the DVD player once bought, I have no TV signal as lost analogue and didn't buy freeview - that's not a huge issue as have freeview in another room and only two of us, so 2 working tv's already.
I was thinking of getting an older model, but they don't do dual disc DVD's have you burnt any VHS onto DVD @ LP and is the roll off really noticeable?
Thanks again for your reply - maybe you can tell i'm stressed
I shouldn't be, but spending money stresses me :rotfl:
I've got to be patient.....somehow
I'm not in a hurry, but now i've been thinking about it, i'm keen to get started

Sounds ideal apart from it doesn't do Dual Layer discs. Are Toshiba's good models in general?Too late now!! I've already bought it!!

Arrgghhh, no more research, I need to grasp some of my life back
I've read Panasonic, along with Sony, Pioneer (who I think make Panasonic?) and one other were the top brands0 -
Mine is a Sony and I would definitely use them again:rotfl:I went to bed thinking of DVD players and woke up thinking of them

You do right to try and get the longest warranty you can but I imagine this depends on where you get it from. I wouldn't spend TOO much if you intend to work it to death with hundreds of videos:D(which is why I suggested a cheapo for merely getting them copied, THEN a dearer one later).

With regards to LP, I've tended to copy most of them in either HQ or SP. I haven't really seen any difference between SP and LP but then again with my eyesight (the worst thing about getting older:eek:) and the quality of some of the programmes - it is hard for me to tell:D

I understand EXACTLY where you are coming from. It took me over a year to get my desktop pc (drove them all crackers on here with questions:rotfl:). I researched, found out what specifications I needed then waited for the right one to come along. I also took the occasional breather to save my sanity. It worked, eventually;) Sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and go for it:D

As always, good luck. Sorry for another long post (note to self, stop waffling)0 -

I hate the sun :rotfl:or at least the heat
but yeah, I need to find something to relax me.
A cheaper one to start with is probably the best idea. I've noticed one about £65 that does duyal layer -DVD but no HDD, but for now, maybe the VCR/DVD Rec combo is the way to go and then in the future, be extravagent with the £'s - I have seen one for £65 ish.
Saying that, I saw this for £135 inc del http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270491352626&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#shId and it does what I want with a 12 month warranty
I'll probably test one on LP and see how it goes - my eyesight isn't great either
Oh i'm already driving people crackers and I have more things to ask in the future. I'll be put on block before long
I think I need to bite that bullet soon!
Waffling is good. You are full of useful waffle

For £10 more, this Sony, but with just a 6 month warranty rather than 12.
It looks like it can do more kinds of DVD too + dual layer as well as - DL and is getting top reviews. Smaller HDD 120 compared to 160 of the LG one) , but that is the least of my concerns
Think I may bite the bullet and get this one.........thoughts anyone?

Waffling is good. You are full of useful waffle Again you must be the only person in the country on my wavelength:D;)
Looked at your ebay links briefly. Personally I'm wary of graded or refurbished (had a graded washer in the past). They seem to be 'secondhand' goods at nearly new prices but I'm not up on the latest prices to be honest.
I would go for the Sony out of the two. I had a quick look on avforums (I would post the link but noticed it had a warning about viruses if you'd visited the site in the last couple of months:eek:).
I managed to get the gist of it though and the Sony one you mention seemed to come out okay. They also suggested the RDR-HXD770's and RDR-HXD870's.
Another opinion was that newer models weren't always better either.
Sony and Panasonic seemed to come out tops (not sure if the old sony was a badged pioneer or something?)
Do you have a Richer Sounds nearby? Alot of people on here seem to use them. They have currently got an old PANASONIC DMREZ27MR for about £70 in their clearance section. (Sorry, can't seem to find much out about it)
I'll stop waffling now ............ it's teatime:)0 -
P.S. Saw the sony you mentioned on Ebay (think it was the argos clearance shop) for about £162 but it said NEW.......................0

I know the feeling. Pop to the shops in the sun for 10 minutes and it kills the rest of my day
I'm a bit wary too, but this Sony has 6 months warranty and LG has 12 month and both from big sellers.
I looked for those other 2 on eBay and they are there, but graded and similar price.
I must have found the same forums through google as I remember seeing a £162 listing of the model but they had all gone
(Didn't know about the virus
)
Don't have a Richer Sounds anywhere near.
We never have the good shops
Enjoy the tea
