Bigger packs are not better value

I know many examples of this have been posted in many threads, but I thought it about time the subject had a thread of it's own.

So here you can post your example of where it is cheaper to buy two (or more) smaller packs than it is to buy a big one.

Spotted today in Morrisons.

Own brand frozen Garden Peas, the 480g packs were 50p each (normal price) and the 907g packs were £1.34 (normal price).

And my favourite, which seems to appear in most supermarkets.

Jus-rol 500g pastry blocks are 80-90p each, but the twin packs containing 2 x 500g blocks are £2.47.

Marmite - the giant one isn't always cheaper per gram than the medium size.

Last time we bought coffee in Makro a 6 pack of 100g jars was cheaper than a 500g tub.

    Puts on my annorak

    tesco porridge oats 500g 42p - 1kg 99p - 6p more
    Tesco easy cook long grain rice 500g 52p - 2kg £2.38 - 30p more
    Smash 220g 87p - 280g £1.31 - 20p more
    Tesco stuffing mix 85g 22p - 170g 54p - 10p more
    Tesco spaghetti 500g 58p - 2kg £2.38 - 6p more

so on 5 items worth £7.60 your paying 72p more than you should be paying thats just shy of 10% extra, great margins there for Tesco

Often basics sandwich ham is cheaper per KG in the smaller packs. I prefer this as well as if I buy 2 small packs then one stays fresh, unopened, rather than one large pack that needs eating up quickly.

Was in Netto yesterday, and they had an offer on the Heinz tomato soup 4 packs, 4 for the price of 3. Thought it was a good offer, but noticed they had other 4 packs without the '4 for the price of 3' yellow flash message on them, I think the yellow flash message was 'Value pack'. The 4ftpo3 pack was £2 but the 'value pack' was £1.86, so not so much of a bargain. They also had an offer on the single tins of heinz tomato soup, if you bought 4 you paid £2.29!

But of course - that extra packaging costs at least 67p you know. :)

I think I spend far too much time reading this forum.

I was walking round Morrisons this morning, when I saw a man with a 12 can pack of Tetley's Bitter in his trolley. I immediately though "Oh, it must be on offer" and headed off to find out how much it was.

Turned out to be a special offer, down from £7.99 to £7.85.

    On the shelf above them was 4 can packs at £2.48. 3 x £2.48 = £7.44

    Yes you do ;)

I agree some deals arent as good as it looks always have a laugh at Tescos sometime offers are 1p less and always like to make out cheaper than Asda, Sainsburys but neglect to say other deals might not be

Sometimes you have to work it out or take a calculator if thats bad enough I now with failing eyesight so cant read small print on packets for ingredients

  • I always look at the price per item/100g/kg or whatever. Have done for a few years now ever since I spotted how much dearer Tesco's fruit & fibre was in the bigger box. Tea bags are often more expensive in bigger boxes too.

Hubby always does the maths in his head, whilst I stand there jumping up & down saying "It's on the label!"

It was the same with Tesco croissants for a long time - the packs of 4 were 88p and the packs of 8 were £1.89. Unfortunately now the packs of 4 are £1.09 - I think they caught on!
