Why not phone up HMRC and ask for their advice? They don't bite! :)

PS Alternatively a Google search on 'tax expenses' etc. will turn up some useful reading material.

If you are self employed or have a two jobs, one thats Perm (PAYE), I suggest you try out this website i found.

Its very easy to use and you can add invoices and expenses very easily, also it keeps an up to date account on what you owe the tax man. just google "self employed tax calculator" with the quotes and its the fourth website down.

It has saved me a load on my accounting costs
  • why not try Contraccounts (contraccounts.com), it does e-invoicing, bookkeeping, tax calculation, and has other benefits for examples ebayers can integrate this tool for effortless bookkeeping, im a powerseller and use this, one word... awesome, all for £50 as well

Anyways I'm trying to find out how much tax I will have to pay when I do my tax return - I am employed and self employed and its the self employed bit I am trying to find out - someone told me it would be 40% which I thought to be very steep - I'm not earning very much on either job!
Ta very muchly for any help.:-)

The tax that you pay will depend on a number of circumstances, the first being how your current employment is taxed, and what the total of thise earnimgs have been. If we assume that your employer uses your personal allowance of £6,475 pa against this then (a) any "profits" from self employment will be fully taxed, as follows, if over £5,715 then you pay NIC at 8%; in addition you pay at least 20% on every pound of profits. If your (total gross salary + profits - £6475) is more than £37,400 then you will pay 40% on profits over that figure. If profits are over £43,875, well done and then you pay 1% extra on NIC.
Note: Look at your P60 for 2009-10, if it has code of 647L (or close to it) then we can assume that the above applies & your employer has used it against you salary; Profits = What you have billed/charged clients minus all expenses that are "wholly & exclusively" for business purposes.
  • Thanks for the link to this programme. It is easy to use and can help before going to the official. The demo version WILL print using foxit reader, which is a bonus.
  • I've always used listentotaxman.com and I've found it very helpful.

    uh oh

Followed the link from here to taxcalc lite
    Purchased at £4.99

    Then noticed it says
    TaxCalc 2007 Lite

So looked at my order page and it says
You have not yet ordered TaxCalc 2010. If you wish to do so, please click here to view our entire product range.
I looked at entire product range page but cheapest option is £24.99 ?

I'm confused as to why they are offering an out of date product or am I missing a huge point ?
Worried I may have just wasted £4.99
    I need to file 2009-2010

    Can anyone help please
"Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes."

All truth goes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Then, it is violently opposed. Finally, it is accepted as self-evident.
  • I think I'll leave it my accountant - doesn't matter how good the software or website is - I'll still mess it up!
