TaxCalc alternative?

  • Use an accountant, preferably a small business or sole trader one who have more competitive rates - most offer a reasonable rate at £50.00 - £100.00 for a basic tax return with small sole trader income, interest, higher rates, property and you get the advantage of you get the added benefit of tax advice to minimise your liability and make sure your return is spot on.

Maybe better than paying for software. Of course I'm biased because I'm a sole trading accountant lol. Otherwise use HMRC's free online service, unless you have complex tax affairs it will suffice and if you DO have complex tax affairs I really would advise using a professional.

  • Hi,
I do need to use commercial software for my self assessment form as I'm an overseas resident. Can anyone recommend one please?
    Thanks
  • recently started my practice and have picked up a small number of (pretty simple) self assessment returns and CT600s. I had intended to buy Taxcalc as this seems to be the widely used tax software and most posters here seem to recommend it. Godaddy promo code | Godaddy discount
  • I have done my tax calculation online with the Inland Revenue for the last couple of years but I suspect that this year I am going to owe them some money. Something free to work this out first would be good!! Are we saying freefile isnt free?
  • Why not use the HMRC website in the normal way but just don't submit the return at the end - stop at the point where the calculation of tax due is done? You can always amend or even delete the figures if you want to, and only submit them when you are ready to do so (which could be weeks later).
  • thanks for the details.
  • Seems like an old slow thread, but it is sticky so here goes.

Looking what to download to complete the SAs this year I came across https://www.gosimpletax.com/. From what I can see it is free, on the grounds if it is it too good to be true...

Has anyone used it, does it let you save data, does the data stay on your PC or go to the cloud?

Do they beg for money later, or ask for money before submission?
  • It's probably fine but it's not really clear what they are offering and I'm always cautious about websites that do not include clear 'contact us' information (in case things go wrong).
  • I need to file a Form 1120S a corporate tax return for S-corporations and last year I spent $300 to do so with TurboTax. I simply cannot afford to pay that this year. Are there any websites that offer free self-prepared tax returns? I've heard some do exist.
