You can register for the Revenue's on line system and then play about with your figures. It seems that your inspector does not get to look at the figures until you actually submit them (and then carry on to pay the tax with your debit card if you want to) HOWEVER your tax inspector does know you have registered.
(My sister came into some money recently, and had trouble getting her tax office to send her a return ! - Yes she did owe them some additional rate tax as we found out by playing with the online system).
I personally have managed to get away with doing a mixed return, part on line and part on paper. In one case I tried to report a small part time job. I had a sort of P60 but no employers PAYE reference, so I submitted my other income on line and thend wrote them a letter about the part time job.
In the second case I had submitted my figures on paper by 30/9th only to have everything rejected in December, because I had not completed the CGT correctly.
I managed to swing it that I could report INCOME tax on their on-line INCOME tax system and report CAPITAL tax on a paper return (I was in a right panic).
But I don't recommend it, my sister tried the same solution and they got really stroppy with her.
Next time I have landed myself with some foreign income - will it be third time lucky ?
Please HMR&C, you bent your system this year for the Abbey shareholders now the Abbey has become Spanish, please put a section in your software for foreign income with NO tax deducted ?!?0 -
Watch out for the inconsistent application of rounding online - could cost you up to £10. On paper you are required to round figures to the nearest £ in the direction most beneficial to you, i.e. income down, tax paid up. Online this now happens for bank interest (after I complained some years ago!) but not in other sections, so before you submit make sure all the amounts you have entered have been rounded to the nearest £ otherwise you'll pay more tax.

Hi, I do my S A tax return online in april, but it can only be done at the end of the tax year. I'm after some, free if possible, software that I can use for this year, so I can keep track of how much I owe so far. Has any one used something they can recomend?

Do try it at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/demo/.0 -
I've always used the inland revenue tax calculator (mentioned post above), and always found it very cheap/user-friendly. I would recommend it, no questions asked.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
