Public services - wave of redundancies?
Comments

being only 6 years from retirement. It would probably cost the local authority more to get rid of me than keep me but I can hope.
They can employ 1.5 new teachers for the price of me just about so you never know.
(I'm a nurse with 33yrs service, and a member of the 'special classes', which means I ought to be able to retire in a few yrs time on my full pension, but I'm not banking on it any longer).Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0 -
why all of a sudden has this thread become about my pension choices and that I'm being berated because of that choice?
I think its because the local authority/nhs pensions are pretty much gold standard (not gold plated though!!!) its suprising that an independent financial advisor would ever tell anyone not to pay into one....maybe if you told them you only planned on staying emplyed for a year or two.....but generally I would have thought the advice would have been to get into the work pension scheme either stop the private one/top up as stakeholder etc if you wanted to. I have been a member of NHS scheme for 15years and had multiple reviews from different financial advisors in that time (when getting mortgages/life insurances etc) and not one has ever suggested not paying in to it.
To be honest if I were you I would consider my position and see if I were in a position to complain about the advice given to you. I know that this is not what you hoped to hear but I think the reason that people are asking you about this is because it seems to defy logic0 -
Getting back on track, anyone clear about the changes to redundancy terms after 22 Oct?
I've read the compulsory/voluntary payments will be 'capped' at some 1 times or 1.5 times annual salary. What I can't see is any explanation on whether the number of weeks per year used to calculate compensation will be reduced.
For example, where I am for voluntary, we'd get 2 weeks salary per year in employment for 1st five years, then 3 weeks per year for next 5 years etc.
If that was changed to 1 week per year after 22 Oct, then regardles of the 'cap', we'd be in a bad place.0 -

i know nothing but can't wait to hear back....
at the moment it's apparantly all smoke and mirrors....
the Tories did this in the 80's (threatened to cut redundancies packages) but they could never ge tthe bill through parliament....
but as i work for the NHS i am waiting for the answer....

oh yes, google transforming community services
I have worked for the NHS for 15yrs + and in the same place for the last 10years, now in April I am set to be emplyed by a social enterprise, doing the same job as before, in the same place, on the same terms and conditions, my managers will be the same, one the same terms and conditions (well you get the picture). The difference ? I wont be emplyed by the NHS anymore, the public will still think I am, but when the whole project goes t*ts up the government will be able to say that its not the NHS fault or even theirs this is a local matter and a problem with each individual company. Will it save money, not that I can see, will it allow deflection of blame from government? oh yes,
But remember this is not just a condem policy, this awful plan was put in place by labour, its Margaret Thatchers wet dream (sorry if that image is too graphic)0 -

This whole NHS reform seems a joke - I'm sure my 11 year old nephew could come up with something better!
*Edited to say that yes the Margaret Thatcher wet dream was far too graphic!!! *bleurgh*0 -
I'm in a government dept up north in Scotland, we've just had offers for early exit put out and it's one months pay per year of service, although last year there was a different offer which was one week's pay for first five years, then 2 weeks pay after that, i've only got about 7 years service so it was no where near worth it, now the offer is alot more attractive with almost a years pay tax free available(if calculator is working properly) plus they want us out the door before the end of March so therefore having to pay us 3 months pay in lieu of notice too, we won't be able to complete forms until approx end of Feb so therefore about 3-4 weeks of work left with 2 months pay extra.
I've applied so we'll see whether they see me as a valued member of staff and wont let me leave! Thanks to all the competition posters.0 -
Oh and a bit of advice - don't accept any voluntary redundancy packages - unless they are on compulsory terms! If not, bide your time and wait because if not enough people take up the voulntary packages, they could eventually make compulsory offers which are more generous.
I wouldn't bet on it - my LA are planning on reducing the redundancy packages in the very near future - thank goodness I got out last July!I want my sun-drenched, wind-swept Ingrid Bergman kiss, Not in the next life, I want it in this, I want it in this
