Public services - wave of redundancies?

this is very true....but do you really want tesco or virgin or American healthcare companies providing your NHS treatment?
American healthcare companies as well as South African and Canadian companies already provide NHS treatment and have been doing so for several years.
Currently called Independent sector treatment centres (ISTC) indeed these were a major reason why waiting times have come down"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

True. But just to be clear, at the risk of becoming pedantic, I expect a good quality NHS which provides healthcare for people according to their healthcare needs and not according to their means. The daughter of my Canadian friend lost her job a few years back and thus her healthcare cover. She has an ongoing and permanant disability which is treatable and perfectly controlled by medication, which she was no longer entitled to because she could not pay for it. Her parents, fortunately, whilst not rich, could afford the nearly $300 per month it cost - not easily but at least they could pay for it. Without it she would have become very ill and unable to work. I do not wish to see that sort of thing happen in this country. In my view that is something that should never happen in a civilised society... and of course I realise that I have just said something that is likely to start several thousand new hares running...0 -
likewise the 'golden handshakes' for redundancies - it ain't happenin! example my mom who has worked for LA for 8 years in a day care centre for disabled adults. the council have decided to close it down to save money along with many other centres. where's her golden handshake?? she gets the same as everyone one else who gets made redundant when a company closes - statutory redundancy pay. so believe what you read in The Sun if you like the truth is very different.
we're not talking about the lower staff, of course she don't get a golden handshake. we're talking about the huge disgraceful amounts people higher up getMartin has asked me to tell you I'm about to cut the cheese, pull my finger.0 -

Well that's the problem isn't it? Who exactly are 'We' talking about? People are not distinguishing exactly who or what they are talking about, they are just jumping on the public sector bashing bandwagon..
All I have heard for weeks now is 'Public Sector Gold Plated Pensions Outrageous Should be Banned Let Them Starve And Serve Them Right yadda yadda yadda...'.
There seems to be an awful lot of name calling and bile. It's extremely disheartening for people, like myself, who have given a lifetime of devoted service, in the NHS in my case, (and bloomin hard work, nights, days, any hour God sends, crumby pay, refusing to strike on moral/compassionate grounds, risking our own health with heavy lifting, exposure to all manner of dangerous bugs and body fluids etc. etc.), only to find when finally within sniffing distance of a reasonable and long anticipated retirement, that the public have suddenly turned against us.

Indeed, but the point I was trying to make was that the "privatisation" of the NHS has been happening for the last 10 years it is not a new nasty Tory idea as some who have obviously been sleeping the last few years seem to imply.
For what it is worth, the redundancies that will be happening in the next 6 months or so was also a process started under the previous government. My OH had to cut her head count by 8 just before the election and having now seen the plans knows that she will lose more, indeed she will more than likely be going herself.
It seemed to me that all parties were lying when they said how nothing would change in the NHS."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

At a recent Civil Service Live event at London Olympia there was a large poster board full of ideas to reduce cost and one poignant yellow post-it note almost hidden in the corner which simply said "Stop picking on us - its not our fault."
So true, we should not forget where this all started and then wonder why thousands of average honest tax paying public servants are being put into a dire situation they never contributed to nor created. For a lot, its heart-wrenching knowledge that all their loyal work over the years is now so publicly being torn apart and apparently of no value to the Coalition. Within this context, serving the government of the day is not an easy job but most somehow still do it with pride and conviction.0 -
I work(worked) for a local council. Mid June we were called in to a meeting and told informally that our department was being closed down "by the end of the year". Every effort would be made to redeploy us somewhere else in the council but if that couldn`t happen then we would be given compulsary redundancy. (We are a team of 6 doing a specialised role which we believe would be impossible to transfer to any other dept). Just one week later we were called into another meeting to be told, "actually the room will be shut down in 3 days time-after which there will be no more work for you" We have yet to get to see or speak to our HR dept so do not know what is happening re redunancy payments etc. Currently we are still being paid but sitting at home.0

That's disgusting! Are you a union member - if so you should get in touch with them straightaway.
The threat of redundancies is sadly hanging over every local council. We've been told that we need to save more money and that they're looking at ways to make us more "cost effective". Always the little guys at the bottom who take the brunt of it.
Has anyone else had that letter from the PM? Mine went straight into the recycle bin!If I have been of any assistance, or my information is useful, please press the "Thanks" button0
