11 -12 Sept in Hull (East Yorkshire)
The freedom festival has been running in Hull since 2008 and has now been deisgnated an anual event. It is a free festival, and anyone is welcome to attend.
The pilot Freedom event took place in Hull on Saturday 30 August 2008 and it was a great success attracting about 30,000 visitors.
Free activities included street theatre, dance performances, live music and a ‘silent disco’ which took place in Queens Gardens, Queen Victoria Square and Trinity Square.
The event followed on from the successful Wilberforce Weekender in 2007 as part of the Wilberforce 2007 year - a commemoration of the abolition of the slave trade with 2009’s festival also marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of William Wilberforce.
Hull's most famous son - William Wilberforce - was a leading light of the anti-slavery movement and the city's involvement with modern human rights issues continues today through the work of the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation.
The event in 2009 ran from Friday 11 September to Sunday 13 September and was bigger, and better, than 2008s pilot event.
The weekend of activity saw the city centre come to life in -- Queen's Gardens - Live music and activities on Saturday and Sunday plus the two fountain bars
- Humber Quays - Live pop acts on Saturday and the start of the Clipper 2009-10 Round the World Yacht Race on Sunday
- Jazz in the Boatshed - Hull's hugely popular Jazz festival will feature as part of the Freedom Festival celebrations this year. Saturday and Sunday
- Queen Victoria Square - A link-up with the BBC's Last Night of the Proms, live from the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday
- Fruit Market - Thursday, Friday and Saturday saw French company lit up the streets with fire installations, to the sounds of DJs and artists,
