Our (electric, unfortunately) hot water heater died a few months ago and the landlord had it repaired. The heating element had completely died, and they replaced it. Since then, my electric bill has gone WAY down! I only turn on the hot water heater for bathtime, and now I only need to leave it on for 20-30 minutes to heat up the whole tank. It used to need 50-70! I don't know how much it costs to replace an aging heating element in an electric water heater, but it might pay for itself.Hi, I'm Mich

Just been to charity shop and picked up another pair of thermal lined curtains for my sons bedroom , they cost £4 and in perfect condition.

Although mirry is correct in that it would be warmer in the bathroom during the day time if you haven't yet turned on your heating, you'd also save money if you didn't have to turn the light on - assuming you have a window in your bathroom that is! It may not add up to much each time but over the course of a year.. and of course, if you have baths (esp long baths like i love) then the savings from not turning on the light tot up even more.

(Occasional) long baths with candles on rather than electric light at night are also a lovely option!
Re. pasta, being an Italian with (VERY FIXED) ideas on how to cook pasta, I am a bit reluctant to try the money-saving method, does the pasta not get all pappy and gluey? I am going to give it a go, nevertheless! It will be interested to challenge my beliefs and 'live dangerously' LOL

Can anyone advise where I'd get a good thermos mug that Mr EL can take on his walk to work? He always boild the kettle, leaves it, reboils it then only drinks half a mug.... If he had a thermos he could make the coffee and take with, warming him on the way?
I looked in Robert Dyas at lunch but none of the mugs looked 'manly' enough for him and they had weird 'half' handles... any ideas much appreciated!MFW #185

Must say I dont like the idea of that at all either, In my way of cooking boiling water nust be added to pasta and kept on the boil, otherwise it does go gluey!
