As I've previously subscribed to this thread, thought I'd post details of this website here as I've also posted on the Gas & Electricity Forum.
    www.communitypurchasing.com
It provides details of a new not-for-profit scheme setting up so that fuel consumers can get together and use their collective negotiating power to hopefully drive down energy prices by effectively doing a "bulk deal" purchase.

Well, we sent off the reading for the elect bill today, after 12 weeks of being careful. Nothing on standby, no big oven , no tumble drier. The last bill was £130, at the lower prices. This one is £99 !!!!! YAAAAY !
  • Congratulations Mardatha - I've been trying to do the same - only heating one room for 2 hrs a night C/H not on any other time, no standbyes - everything gets switched off at wall, only thing left on in daytime is fridge freezer - even the radio alarm gets switched off in the bedroom, don't have a tumble drier, have been trying to use oven less as well - next bill is due January - so am keeping fingers crossed it will be lower than last year (£150.00). Have also been working out how much gas/electricity spent each week - doesn't look too bad at the mo - as by self lot easier than having big family - but if i can keep to about £5.00 per week each, I will be well happy !
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on

That's great mardatha. You've saved percentage wise 25%,which is the same as we have after turning everything off that usually was on standby. We are saving about £120 a year(£30) a quarter, even in summer just by turning off.
Mind boggles at how much we've wasted over the years.
For those clever people who can work out how much individual items use, could someone tell me how much a 150w item costs to run per hour if electricity is say 15p a unit.
I know someone did explain but I can't find it.Thankyou.

A unit is one kilowatt hour. A kilowatt is 1,000 watts. Therefore a 150w item would cost 150/1,000 multiplied by your unit cost of 15p, giving you 2.25p per hour.

    Hope this helps,

    cov.

Hey Gang...how we all doing then? We've had an enforced spell of poota inactivity due to a trojan invading the airwaves so a week of reduced lekkie can't be all bad ;)

But now we've another  with the tv! It's a second-hand monster of a plasma screen that was working fine up to 2am  but now has only red & blue colourings to the picture. Any of yooze lot know where I can find out what a good energy ratings make is so I can start hunting for it at a reasonable price? I've put a request on the tekkie board too so fingers X The Family That Is MSE will come up trumps :p

The offspring watch a fair bit of the box I guess & of course I have my favourites, but to be perfectly honest it is our biggest source of entertainment. None of us are party animals; 2 offspring smoke & all three may visit the cinema if something appeals but that is getting less often....

  • this might be a really stupid question but i noticed several of you say about only heating one room......if i turn all the other radiators off then and just have living room on will it be cheaper???
cant get my head around how it all works!
