Hi guys just been reading through some of this thread for ideas. Eon have put our direct debits up by 50% and although we have been really careful we are still using quite a bit for both gas and electricity. We are limited in some of the things we do though as we rent our own place and they only have single glazing, plus the lounge never gets any sun so is always freezing!

I have already been doing several things to cut down, such as reducing amount of time hot water and central heating is on, plus turning off the hobs and oven so that the food can continue cooking from the heat left over.

Sounds like people are doing a great job and i have picked up some tips to use. I will be creating my sausage dog for the two doors that we have, shortly. I have moved all stuff near radiators so that we get the full benefit of the heat and have turned down the heating to 17degrees, no one is complaining so far!!

I was thinking of putting foil behind the radiators but my partner thinks it will look silly. But if you put it behind the radiators you don't need to put that much that it goes above the height of the radiators do you? Any advice greatly appreciated and i will be reading this thread with interest!

    Last week you spent:
    • £9.87 on gas
    • £8.76 on electricity
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (15 weeks ago):
    • £95.47 on gas
    • £123.96 on electricity
last weeks elec was £11.16 on electricity, gas £12.08 - i am pleased that this weeks figures are a bit less, I am at a loss to why the elec was so much more than the prev weeks. When it is cold now I am using the ch when ever I need it. The rooms with the bubble wrap on the windows are so much warmer than those without and keep the heat in a lot longer. Yesterday during the daytime with the sun blazing thry I saw the temp rise to 23c in the bedroom from the sun, have been drying clothes in there and they dry in a day.

jscalow - the only problem you could run into if you regularly dry clothes in a bedroom is that any moisture in the air as a result could seep into wardrobes and cause mould to form on clothes if they are shut in a badly ventilated cupboard. It might be a good idea on dry sunny days to open wardrobe doors to help prevent this happening.

Is anybody else finding this a really bad winter so far ? We still had snow lying (bits here and there) up to yesterday, and overnight it has poured more snow down and is still falling. It's been below freezing for ages as well.

zarazara - well I hope Ebico refund you more quickly than Southern Electric. They owe us over £100 and we've been waiting since September for a refund cheque. We've now sent them a bill for outstanding interest due but I expect it will still fall on deaf ears. Time for a complaint to the Ombudsmen I think.

Yes...feel cold all the time, and all the tips I picked up from this thread still not making my house any warmer... Well, maybe they are and we'd be even colder without them . Notice a difference in the kitchen once the curtain is closed and the draft excluder tucking it in.

Brr. I'm sure it's not usually this cold for this long at this time of year.

Sitting here wrapped in a huge blanket-like shawl i bought in Cairo years ago and have never worn, and wondering whether to get the fingerless gloves back on...

    Sorry...in a moany mood today!
