What I don't understand is why, when the energy companies are promoting insulation and everything do they charge more for the first lot of units you use and decreas the cost per unit if you use more, shouldnt it be the other way round to encourage people to use less? Or am I missing something?

    My heating is still off.

I've got the cling film on some windows, a velvet thermal front door curtain, hot water bottles etc.

Made an oxtail casserole in the slow cooker and mash and broccoli for tonight, as well as a lamb korma for tomorrow evening and a watercress soup. Lamb korma and soup will go into Tupperware containers in the fridge for eating tomorrow and the next day. Saves oin using the cooker and will be heated up in the microwave.

I'm surviving in a long sleeved t-shirt and track pants and slippers.

My DIL stopped off earlier to fetch some oxtail casserole for her and my son, as they work long hours in London and she only gets home at 6.30 while he is working late tonight. I cook for them sometimes, just making their lives a bit easier.

It was quite cold out when I opened the front door to her and my 2 little grand daughters.

The elder one hugged me around the waist and said, Nanna I don't want to let you go, you're so warm!

They can tug at your heartstrings alright!

Mine charge that way 'cos I've opted not to have a standing charge. If I use all the units that are charged the higher price, then it costs me the same as having a standing charge --- so the aim is to not reach the full number at high. I'm in this position with my gas, but don't see me ever gaining on the electricity side for being NSC......

Heating has been on for an hour in the mornings, the last 2-3 weeks - but I can live with that.

Started running my dehumidifier yesterday, when I noticed slight condensation on the windows. The big problem with this house, is condensation on the double glazing on the inside - twice as worse when cooking with water!

  • but does it not cause your house to become damp having the heating off??

Yes. Although some houses are worse than others. We have a cold, damp downstairs bathroom and I've had to have the heating on in the evening. Otherwise, after a couple of baths, the walls are running with water. I do open the windows during the day but on damp days, it makes no difference.

I agree, but what do you do when the Council turns down your planning app to install alternative energy methods? I know more than one person who's application to put solar panels in their roof has been denied. "Its an eyesore" was the reason given in one case.
    .

Well yes, that is a good point. Councils should be barred from turning down such applications - minor issues of asthetics are not as important as heating people's homes!
