Avoid using GAS and ELECTRIC !

Regarding the argument that we're running out of resources, I think its more a case of the U.K. lagging very much behind in developing alternatives and especially making a concerted effort to be much less dependant on foreign energy sources. Gas is king and for many people, there is no other alternative. Even if you can access coal or wood (which can also be expensive), you may be in a no burn zone and therefore that option is taken away from you.
Absolutely agree. No Government looks beyond the next election so none of them have taken a long term view and put enough resources into alternative means of energy. There is also the small fact that in general Government supports business more than it does individuals (my opinion there!) and a lot of people are making a lot of money off fossil fuels... making hay whilst the sun shines.
Rather than piling tax after tax on ordinary individuals in a big stick approach to change habits, how about they give big tax breaks to people who install solar/wind/heat sumps? How about they do more to give those on benefits grants to do the same? You cannot expect people to change just because you're bleeding them dry - a bit of common sense needs to apply here, if you bleed them dry they have no money to invest elsewhere!!“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

I agree, but what do you do when the Council turns down your planning app to install alternative energy methods? I know more than one person who's application to put solar panels in their roof has been denied. "Its an eyesore" was the reason given in one case.
Taxation, whomever its aimed at, isn't the answer any more. You need to empower people by giving them viable alternatives. There's absolutely no reason why the U.K. couldn't become a leader in this area.0 -
Yes, when I suggested people joining me in NO heating until 1st November, please don't join in if you are going to end up with a damp house or be putting yourselves at risk or making yourselves uncomfortable. I just know that, all too readily in the past, I've flicked the heating on in September / October ... not this year though!!!
Do you mean no heating all ie: central and gas fire(s) or just the central heating?
The thing thats always baffled me is how the gas bill can be as high as it is when the c/h isn't on more than 3 hours out of 24 each day. The rest of the consumption is hot water (we have a new boiler thats not on 24/7) and the gas fire which, admittedly, is on quite a lot in the Winter, but is also new so I'd have thought it would be energy efficient. Gah!0 -

We've got a living flame fire, we never use it  I like it because it looks nice lol, but I want to move the sofa to the wall it's on so we're going to chop away the front bit (what's that bit called? I've forgotten) and put the sofa in front of it. Then at Christmas I'll rearrange a bit cos I love to decorate the fire
Just the fire mind, there's no surround or mantlepiece

When we bought this house (6+ years ago) we discussed having a fire put in.
Hubby wanted a living flame gas fire, and I said no. He only wanted it 'cos he liked the cosy look of flames, and I pointed out we knew from our last house (no where near as energy efficient) that the CH would give us all the heat we needed -- so putting on a fire as well would mean opening windows to cool down again, which would be a total waste of money. Plus it would need regular servicing which is another cost.
Convinced him an electric fire where he could just turn on the 'flame' lights would be good enough, but it wasn't until I took him to some showrooms that he believed they looked as nice.
As it happens we didn't get a fire at all. We found some lovely (and very old) display cases, but we didn't have room (or money) for them and a fire -- so the units wonCheryl0
