oh its so cold here today, but i haven't gave in, iv'e got all the blinds/curtains open to let in the warm sun and at about 4pm they will be getting shut to keep the heat in!
DD will be having a hot water bottle on her bed with pj's wrapped around it for 10 minutes before she gets in bed!! i think i might even put the halogen heater on for 10 minutes in her room to just take the chill off her room, as it was quite chilly in there last night(tho the room thermometer said it was 18c it felt a lot cooler)
really need to get myself some slippers and fingerless gloves!!0 -
I know the human race got on w/o central heating and electricty (let's not forget indoor plumbing and the Internet!) in the past. But its the 21st century for Pete's sake. Adequate heat and light should no longer be a luxury, available only to those who can afford to pay for it.
At the end of the day when you've done everything you can to cut back, make do etc.. the fact of the matter is wages simply aren't keeping up with the cost of living.
I'd love for someone to come up with a suggestion to fix that little problem.0 -
I have the heating on at about 18 degrees as both me and my housemate are off today and its a bit chilly, but we've had the hob on making a chicken soup from the leftovers of the roast I did on Sunday, and I have a fleece on now rather than a tshirt, and the house is all toasty. I have ordered some more throws for the sofas and will be getting a couple of fleecy throws to snuggle under in front of the TV too. Im going to get some more kindling later so I can build a fire tonight. I really want a thick curtain to go in front door, but I cant seem to find one anywhere that wont cost me £35+, therby overiding any saving in heating, any ideas?
CC limits £26000
Long term CC debt £0
Total low rate loan debt £3000
Almost debt free feeling, priceless.
Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.0 -
I must be having an angry day because up until now I have been right up for keeping my heating off until November and saving as much as I can and then I started to read the other posters on here and I am no SO angry with this government, people are wrapping up in all sorts of blankets/quilts/gloves/slippers/Hot water bottles/Flannelette sheets and all sorts just to keep warm (me included dont get me wrong here) and the government are doing Bu**er all about it, it is 2008 and my parents are scared to put the heating on, AGHHH it makes me so annoyed, as a starter for 10 I say the government quite free heating fuel to the over 65's, what do you all think ?0

Fact is that resources are running out. It isn`t that wages are not keeping up, it is that people have not been cutting their cloth accordingly and have landed in debt bigtime with no savings behind them and who is to blame? oh yes, everyone except themselves0 -
Yes, when I suggested people joining me in NO heating until 1st November, please don't join in if you are going to end up with a damp house or be putting yourselves at risk or making yourselves uncomfortable. I just know that, all too readily in the past, I've flicked the heating on in September / October ... not this year though!!!That's Numberwang!0

No one in my social circle is wasteful or bought into the "cheap credit out of thin air" bubble that's recently burst. In fact, I'd say most of us are frugal to a fault. With us at least, it is most definitely a case of outgoings exceeding incomings.
Regarding the argument that we're running out of resources, I think its more a case of the U.K. lagging very much behind in developing alternatives and especially making a concerted effort to be much less dependant on foreign energy sources. Gas is king and for many people, there is no other alternative. Even if you can access coal or wood (which can also be expensive), you may be in a no burn zone and therefore that option is taken away from you.
However, we soldier on and try to plan ahead for the future as best we can. It ain't for lack of trying, as the saying goes.0 -
For those who don't have a slow cooker but are considering getting one....
The leaflet I picked up in Aldi this afternoon says they have a 6.5 litre one on sale from this Sunday (5th) for £19.99. Looks exactly like my Morphy Richards one (that cost me £21.44 after some price match haggling).Cheryl0
