I don't think it would do any harm to turn it off. I turn mine off at the wall when I remember. Most of the time, I connect automatically when I turn my laptop on but occasionally I have to click 'reconnect'. Not sure how accurate this is:

I turn mine off every time I turn my computer off. It is on and off at least 3 times every day and often more than that0

you will with any device, but the more you switch it on and off the
more 'wear' you're giving the device - every time you switch it on it
has a surge of energy to deal with. More on/off = more likely to
eventually pop and let the magic smoke escape. Is the amount you'll
save more than the cost of a new router?0 -
Should add that I leave mine on all day and only switch off at bedtime. School hols I'm on and off laptop (on too much TBH) all day and term time, others in the family work different hours so makes sense to leave on. Had it three or four years now.0

I supply these for work to 4000+ homeworkers. I switch mine off when it isn't in use, and advise others to do the same. We have had no issues with wear and tear (and I switch mine off at the mains, not at the button on the route), and we've actually seem a reduction in calls to the helpdesk about issues with blocked lines (where we advise users to switch off for 20 minutes and try again), so we've come to the conclusion that it's actually better and more productive to switch on and off regularly!0 -
We used to leave our router permanently switched on, but now turn it off every night.0

Working my way through experimenting with cutting fuel usage. Having just switched over to a different fuel company again (to go on a fixed rate) - I've told them that though I was paying £61 per month to my previous company and I see they have put me at £69 (ie the £61 and the 13% price increase to fix my price:eek: ) - that I will be amending my direct debit to £50 - as I feel its not reasonable for a single person with a full-time job to have to spend more than that on fuel per month - even with the price rises.
Should be able to cut back to that - I've recently had to swop both cooker and fridge/freezer - so the cooker is now A-rated and the fridge/freezer is A plus-rated and am planning this winter on changing my central heating from being on both morning and evening sessions and any time in between when I think I will (with 6 radiators on out of my 7) - will now try for morning session only and the 3 most important radiators only (ie bathroom, kitchen and front bedroom). Planning on using my halogen heaters for the rest of my heating.
Hopefully that will be achievable - even though I'm still working on training myself to switch lights off when not in use.
Its the psychological angle as well that one has to work on - it feels brighter to have lights on (even if they are not in use) and I work on not just not being cold - but on physically being warm and cosy.0 -
Thanks for everybody's replies.I think I'll leave my router switched on through the day while I'm in.I'll probably be on/off the internet all day anyway.0
