We lined the floorboards with hardboard sheets nailed down over the top then put the underlay and carpets back down.Don't know how much this would cost these days as it was about 15 years ago when we did it.It does make a big difference though.
Thanks for that carriebradshaw:D OH works at a place that uses alot of hardboard too, hmmmm wonder if he could get some on the cheap;)
It would be alot easier for us than insulating under the floorboards I think. But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.0 -
larmy ,lol. You got me thinking now .
Last night I cooked some rice on the hob ,
I got it to boil then turned the gas off and left it sitting with the lid on and it worked.
Today I found my hubby had left the tv on whilst he was out in the garden for 2 hours  , he said i am being petty , so does anyone know how much that would cost ?
This morning I felt cold for the first time , the air seems alot cooler and I dread keeping warm this winter.Kindness costs nothing0 -
Thanks for that.....confused as to why you need the workman to come and switch the gas lever on again - is it in some madly inaccessible place or there's some other sort of difficulty I dont think I have
. In my case my gas lever is right next to my gas meter - in a cupboard in the sitting room. So I reckon all I would have to do is a simple flick of the lever to the off position and "bobs your uncle" - sorted. My house couldnt possibly use a scrap of gas and would be perfectly safe and I could reverse the situation and have all the gas appliances back to normal by just flicking the lever back into the on position
??????? Am I right in thinking that??

The workman relights my pilot light in the fire again
and has to do a pressure check again, according to councils gas control office
Thanks for that. Reet...well my pilot light blows out often enough that I'm well in t'habit of getting out the long matches and relighting it myself. The pressure check - right, when that there gasman of mine comes in for his yearly "service" I'll get him to show me how to do a pressure check.
Reckon that'll be me sorted then for switch on/off at lever as I want. My gasman knows me well enough by now to know that I'm going to do so anyways - whatever he says - so he might as well teach me that pressure check bit....;)
So - its just down to whether I'll create any problems for my boiler if I switch it off totally...must remember to ask said gasman re that.......0 -
I don't know how they do a pressure check, but I'd have thought they use a meter of some kind.0

The obvious way to avoid using 'electric' is to use electricity instead.
My vote for energy usage avoidance goes to spending as much time as possible out of the house in other people's places!
I suggest the triple whammy achievable by visiting Mr Tesco or Mr Asda etc for doing your shopping of an evening this winter. That way you can:
1. run your home on minimum
2. stay nice and warm at Mr Tesco's expense
and not forgetting
3. stand some chance of late evening markdown reductions on foodstuffs0 -

After saving almost 25% off my electrictity the past two quarters just by turning everything off at standby I'm reluctant to leave anything on standby at all.My problem is that yesterday I installed a router for my new laptop and I don't know wether I will damage the connection by turning it off and on when not using it.Since it has a big flashing blue light on it it must use a bit of power.I did turn it off last night to check wether it would reconnect with no problems but I'm still not sure about wether it would harm it in the long run.Any advice would be appreciated.Thanks.0

I'll ask my hubby. He's a network engineer in IT so deals with routers all the time. He's only just left for work, so I'll send him an email and let you know what he says.0
