I have discovered that everything cooks so much quicker doing this. I was really wasting gas before.
I expect it has been done but I have just cooked pasta to perfection in about 5 minutes less than without a lid.
:beer:0 -
T'is one of my (many) bugbears (sp?) - if I walk into kitchen and see saucepan without lid, I can't stop myself interfering.0
-
gangsta and anyone else: pasta will cook if you boil 1 min, switch off, put lid on and leave 15 minutes0

To be honest, I am not a big pasta person, it was for my kids, but will remember that one. The kids will only eat it if swollen to twice it's size.
But I am going to do this with frozen veg, maybe not potatoes if mashing.
Thanks anyway.0 -
It's like I have discovered the Wheel, I was so excited;)0

Sammy, I still have the thermals and water bottles and will be making good use of them again this year. I think it will be interesting to see how long we can keep the heating off this year now the prices are double  .
.
Yep I still have my rice bags to make - shameful i know - may just use odd socks of daddys, fill them with rice and tie a knot in the end seeing as my sewing machine went bang and i cant afford to replace it yet.
Have managed to get a few bits done - i brought little one a dressing gown to day in the peacocks sale (was £7 reduced down to £2.50) - it was lovely and soft and he likes it so hoping when he comes home from school on a wet day he can strip off, cuddle up in that to stay warm with a cup of hot chocolate and a cuddle. Fingers crossed ill nip back to get a nice dressing gown there they were only £12 but i will double check ethol austins and be wise etc first to make sure im getting a good deal.
Mother has informed me today that my grandparents left me £100 when they moved to Ireland, so now im stuck - do i
a) save it away for christmas??
b) use it to sort out my flat ready for christmas??
bearing in mind in the next few months i will be picking up extra shifts in my job because ben starts school and im the one who pays the gas and electric bill by myself?? the option of spoiling myself isnt goign to happen - although i could split it - give £50 to ben (littlie) and use £50 to do the flatTime to find me again0 -
Haribo , can you let us know if its worth buying and how long does it last for after each wind ? Cheers !
.
TBH I haven't used it much so have no idea how long it lasts but it's not very taxing to wind it anyway. The light is very "white" but I find it fine to see by and am using it in my greenhouse for a bit of late night tomato care.0 -
Woohoo OH has just returned with a 3 way adaptor so we can switch off the aerial, video and digibox instead of leaving them on standby at night. Actually I'm a bit stunned really because he's also bought some new bulbs for his shed and he's just called the small person out of his bedroom to count up how many lights he's left on as he's been getting ready for bed. I've come back from work to find a flask next to the kettle which he informs me he will be storing the rest of the hot water in from when he's boiled the kettle [we only ever fill it to the minimum anyway but still half of that's wasted when it's just him at home] for a cuppa. I make him a flask of coffee to last him the morning [he works from home] And I thought I was the frugal one:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I like the tactic my lovely SIL has employed....she has stuck down the thermostat dial to stop either her kids or husband turning it right up all the time [she's not sure who the culprit is yet:D] as she's having a constant battle to stop them heating the house in winter as if they are sunning themselves in sunnier climes:eek:

PS I think I need to get out more...I am very overexcited because OH has just put our new freecycle lights up in the kitchen and I now have a new freecycle monitor. I am exceedingly over excited by all this:D:DAiming for a life of elegant frugality wearing a new-to-me silk shirt rather than one of hair!0
