really daft question - and perhaps it's already been answered in this thread. I have a gas combi boiler for the central heating. Heating is currently off as the house is warm enough. The switch is left on at the tap symbol which means we always have hot water. Should I not be doing this and set the timer for it only to come on during the day (we obvsiouly don't need hot during the middle of the night)0

We've got the same, if there's no hot water tank, I don't think it makes any difference.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

no - theres no hot water tank......
It just popped into my head for some reason that I might be paying for hot water being heated in some way when i don't really use it...0 -
My understanding is that as you turn the hot tap on, boiler kicks in so you are only paying to heat the water as you use it.
But that means ... no airing cupboard. Missing mine too.0 -

My challenge is
' I WILL NOT PUT MY HEATING ON BEFORE NOVEMBER 1st! '
whos next??
Hi,
We try this challenge (with varying degrees of success over time) every year!
This year with the increases we are even more determined to stick to no central heating until 1st Nov, but with the proviso that if it is really cold we put the woodstove on (as wood is free, scavenged from skips etc). We usually fall when the kids (teenagers) get whinging that it is freezing etc...
Good luck!

According to this, it costs about 17p to have the heating on for an hour in mild weather. Cheaper than the tumble drier!
Errr......tried to click on the link and then tried just first bit of it....same response both times..."The website requires you to log in"...
Any other way of getting to it purlease?0 -

Hmm. Strange, I can't get it either. I did the following google search:
cost gas central heating average hour
and it was the third result. If you still can't get it, pm your e-mail address and I'll send you a copy.0 -
I spoke to chap who came to service our combi boiler (who had on the side of his van that he was an eco plumber - didn't know this when I booked him). When he asked me what I did I said I always switch off after I have used boiler and back on again for showers.washing up etc. I asked him was this right or was it cheaper just to leave on. He said switching off is the cheapest way to do this. Hope this helps.0

Thanks for that - Google has put in another one now - but I found this on 4th link down - so have had a looksee.
This whole subject is a bit confusing isnt it? Am now sitting here pondering what the difference is between "gas fire" cost 11p per hour on full and "wallmounted gas flued heater" cost 6p per hour on full!!! Twould be interesting to know their definition of "very cold weather" - central heating costs 44p and "cold" weather - central heating costs 23p per hour. Hmmmm....but think I should be saving quite a bit by using a halogen heater instead - 2 "bars" worth (ie 800 watts) just in whichever room I am sat in - rather than having the central heating on (think that works about 8p for my 2 "bars" worth on that) - so quite a bit cheaper than even the 17p per hour they say gas central heating is in "mild" weather (think? as the heating they mention includes water heating - but my water only heats as and when I switch on the hot tap).
Anyone got any idea whether my gas sitting room fire counts as:
- "gas fire" or
- "Wall mounted gas flued heater" purlease?
Getting confused - as arent all gas fires wallmounted? Mine is a Baxi Bermuda one, mounted on sitting room wall - and used to have a backboiler behind it - till I had it ripped out for being inefficient and a "proper" boiler got put in elsewhere (now why was I not surprised when I read subsequently that backboilers can only handle 5 radiators - so no wonder it wouldnt cope with my 7 radiators I have).0
