onlyoneme wrote:Why does it smell and what do you do to make any smell go away?. Mine is fairly new (6 months old) and I ALWAYS rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher – so there is no food residuals in there. However it is starting to make a smell now when you open them.
What can you do?
Even though you rinse your crocks I think the smell comes from either the filter or waste pipes.
I was advised to get a lemon, cut it in half and put in the rack which holds the cutlery. You can then run dishwasher empty or when full as usual. I ran mine full with the lemon in and crocks didn't taste of lemon. Only thing is it doesn't last long, need to do this quite regularly.
I prefer the shop bought finish dishwasher fresheners. They smell nice and last quite awhile.

You could try putting some soda crystals and bicarb and run it empty, then put half a cut lemon in the cutlery thingy when you use it next.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Not very old style, but Sainsbury's do dishwasher cleaning tablets that cost less for 8 tablets than Finish cleaner does for one bottle - cleans the dishwasher a treat and doesn't stink like Finish.
Baking soda scattered round the bottom might work - it absorbs smells from carpets and shoes anyway.0 -
Can anyone advise how I can make my diswasher less whiffy? I clean it regulary by taking all components out and giving a good scrub. I put white vinager in and put it on a quick cycle once a week, and I don't put poor quality tablets in it, but it smells whiffy. The stuff comes out smelling like what I can only describe urgh. It remids me of when our dog got wet and needed a bath.
Any ideas on how to de whiff?0 -
I remember my Mam saying the brand of stuff she used in the machine caused a smell once, she changed it and it was fine after that. She'd always used same one but they did something to make it better and it stank.
I don't have one so sorry can't be of any further help but hopefully someone canOne day I might be more organised...........

It may not be anything directly concerned with the d/washer but the drain smell? Depends on your plumbing setup really. I put mine on a bleachwash now and then to freshen it up with nothing in it. I always remove the dishes as soon as they have cooled-I never leave them in there for hours as they can smell.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0

Not very OS, I know - but have you tried a commercial cleaner like FInish? I was wondering if the vinegar might be causing the smell. (I know it doens't cause a problem when you use it in the WM, but then the WM isn't quite as enclosed as a DW), and I was thinking that if you tried a cleaner instead and it DIDN'T stink then you'd know it was the vinegar. If it does still smell then you'll know it isn't the vinegar IYKWIM
Having said that, I don't use the normal DW cleaners. I use a product called Service Engineer from Lakeland. I put half a bottle through my dishwasher every two months, so one pack lasts for 4 DW cleans. Here's a link http://www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/!20348
Finally, are you sure there isn't a filter somewhere that you've missed? I discovered that my filter comes apart and there was all sorts of carp inside that I hadn't seen.0 -
Have you tried putting it on its hottest cycle once in a while? I know this is the advice for washing machines since bacteria etc can gather in odd corners and it needs the boil wash to kill them. I usually fire in a glug of bleach when I'm doing this.
The other thing is that our DW needs to be left open a crack pretty much all the time or else it starts to smell damp. washing machine also needs to be left open for a bit after a wash too. Maybe this would help?0 -
Thank you thank you, pulled dw apart to see if I had missed a filter. Put a glug of bleach in, ran cycle put dishes in and took then out ASAP and left dw door open a fraction.
So not sure which one worked but something did.
THANK YOU
