I wrote them an email. I will wait for their reply before writing them off.
I understand this is not an easy service for an ISP to provide, but for the usage I make of the internet I definitely need to be able to access my local network from outside.
If it's only for you to access I'd set up a logmein account. If you need a static IP address UW are looking into providing these in the future at some point....if they don't already...but you have to request it.

You can use your own router on UW broadband. They'll give you the all the settings you need to enter into the router.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Logmein is not good for performance. When I host game serves I want minimal latency, and some Steam applications don't work well through logmein.

I already have my own modem/router, and I tried everything from port-forwarding my HFS port to set up a DMZ.
After a brief whois search of the IP(s) I appear to have on the outside, I came up with this link.

So yes, direct access is not an option - for now, at least.
  • Can you help me with a utility problem: I had my gas & electric with Utilities Warehouse since June 2012 and provided my meter readings monthly - we are careful and not excessive users and the bills where between 420 and 500 plus per month! changed to EON who say based on our usage monthly DD is 150 for combined G & E. I have emailed Utility Warehouse to complain of their extortionate prices and they say that charges where for my monthly readings and usage. BUT I feel they have been charging far too much, do I have a case or can they get away with these charges?? Many thanks for any advice

You should have had the unit rates on your bill to use to compare to other suppliers. Did your UW bill include other services? They may be a little more expensive if you are on the wrong tariff but they aren't that much more expensive. How many kWh did you use each month and what extra charges are on the bill?

I am no fan of the company but there is no way that £150 of Eon energy would cost £450. Even if you were mistakenly on the low user tariff the difference could not be that high.

Please look again at the charges for X00 kWh of gas and Y00 kWh of electricity from the two companies. You have not done your sums correctly.

Welcome to the forum. £500/mth?? I'm sure there will be illegal cannabis farms that use way less than that :D What sort of usage figures have been shown on your monthly bills? Perhaps you could post them up here and let us have a look and see what's gone wrong.

PS What sort of gas meter do you have, imperial or metric?

PPS Certainly in my area (Yorkshire), based on average consumption, the difference between Eon's cheapest tariff and UWs cheapest tariff is approx 3% not 300% :D

Is it the gas or the electrcity where the bill has becoem 'extortionate'? If the former, then, as Millicent indicated, the first thing to check is whether you have a metric meter, but are being billed for imperial units. Check your meter and bills.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • That does sound odd. I'm with utility warehouse (they're all right), send my meter readings every month and pay £130 combined. And I'm still in credit for my gas after the winter. So I haven't noticed them being particularly extortionate, certainly not compared to !!!!!!! Eon who used to charge me twice as much.

I have checked my gas meter and it is ft3 which I believe is imperial, maybe that's the problem, don't understand what difference that would make tho. My last gas bill with them showed: units 184. calorific value 39.2. kilowatt-hours5798. pence per kilowatt-hour 14.336. total cost £251.40 (gas only!) standing charge per day 2.35 - Woops sorry 4.336p per kw hour!

    ...ft3 ... what difference
Well, with rounding, ft3 = cubic feet. There are loads of cubic feet in a cubic metre.
