like tonyhamm I have been convincing myself that capping is not a good idea

1 - I have an existing cap until November 2008, so its increasing my cost substantially in the short term

2 - oil prices could come down

3 - I dont believe the government will tolerate price increases at this level - some action is inevitable

I am going to wait a while

  • I'm tied in and ot sure if I can cap without penalty will have to check it out.
  • I have just received an email from Sainsbury offering a capped deal until 2009, there is a £50 redemption if you change within the twelve months, but I cannot tell whether it is worth changing as I do not know their regular tarriff and I have already had trouble when changing suppliers a year ago sorting out the whole sorry paperwork mess. Has anyone else received offer and can advise

Just a heads up. Eon online unit prices do not include discounts so bear little relation to your bill. You need to phone Eon and ask for an estimate of the extra you will pay per year on tariff x (capped or otherwise). In my case the online displayed unit prices with 10% more for the capped tariff, but over the phone figure was a 32% increase in my bill.

Glad I fixed it just in time...

Bubbles - I got that e-mail from Sainsburys too and was wondering if it was now worth switching from E.On as well...

  • I see that Martin's current advice is NOT to switch tariff or provider until the current round of price rises has completed.

Being with Southern Electric at the moment, I ran a comparison on Confused.com in the aftermath of their recent price rise announcement.

It told me that I could get a capped rate with Scottish & Southern (Southern's parent company) for only about £100 more than my current standard rate, which seemed like a decent bet, since this would be considerably lower than the post-rise price for me, staying on their standard tariff.

However, Confused.com also told me that I could switch to an NPower standard tariff and still save over £300 per year.

According to the information I can see, NPower have already increased their prices (not saying it won't happen again).

So, can someone tell me why moving to this NPower tariff might be a bad idea - assuming that Confused.com have the prices up to date for this tariff?

I appreciate it won't be capped/fixed, but I've already missed the boat on the really good capped rates, so surely at worst I'll get cheaper gas & electricity for the few months until the next round of rises and then have to shift again. Plus I get the switching cashback AND the £50 or so of my money back that Southern Electric are currently sitting on as overpayments.

Where's the flaw in my logic here?

As far as I am aware Southern do not have a capped offer. They do have a discounted offer but that tracks their standard product with, I think, a 2% discount.

No, they don't. They have a discounted product which seems pretty lame.

Scottish & Southern have the capped product I mentioned.

But my main query was whether there is a flaw in my logic over the switch to NPower (or any other cheaper standard tariff, so long as it is from a provider who has already increased prices in this round of announcements)

OK, could you point me to it as I can't find it on their site?
