  • Having left BG quite a few years ago and all the adverse comments about them and their prices, I'm finding it a bit scary that they come up as my best buy, with possible savings of £112 pa (27%) on Energyhelpline (haven't checked others yet). Can it really be this much?
  • A word of caution!

Last week I used Energyhelpline to check my electricity provider, it came up with British Gas as saving the most. So I agreed to switch.

Today a guy from BG phoned, to confirm the switch. In the course of the conversation I became suspicious, and asked him what I would actually be charged (I'd heard that BG had recently increased prices). He told me, and I had a 2-week old bill to hand - the price they were going to charge after the switch was 20% more than I'm currently paying. I challenged this, and he said he didn't have the actual prices as I'd used a web based agency...

This sounded like a load of flannel to me (or worse), so I cancelled the switch.

My advice - when the new provider calls to check the details, ask for the actual prices they'll be charging - you may be surprised, as I was!

Supposedly....when you tell them your postcode and your current supplier and the amount you pay.....they divide the unit cost of your gas/elec into the amount you pay....from this they find out your usage, then multiply it by the prices charged by the other suppliers in your area....then deduct any discount those suppliers give and then let you know which is better or worse..........if you'd like to tell me your postcode, who you are with now, and the amount of gas and elec you pay now.....I'll have a look for you....you can PM me if you want to kep it private...

    Got your PM.......

Forgetting which actual Scottish Power tariff you are on at present....British Gas comes out top.....but....depending on the tarrif you are on, the gain varies from only £28 if you are using SP online to about £50 for SP standard......so the upheaval may not be worth it....unless of course SP puts its prices up again......BG prices have just gone up....

    hope this helps...

It certainly can....but why not cross check it with USwitch or another comparison site.

Re your phone.....can you trust yourself to send in vouchers to reclaim your line rental......You must do this exactly as it says......If you can then there are plenty of 12 month contracts for say 250 minutes and 50 texts(and possibly better ones) for £30 a month with 12 months free rental(by redemption).......and if you go through Quidco...you can get £30 to £45 off them as well........so in the end if you dont use more than your contracted amount....you can actually get them to give you money to have a free phone for a year......I acually sold my new phone for £180....and put the contract sim in an old phone....so up till now I'm £210 up on the deal.....if you are interested please search for the Coolnewmobile forum(and I will talk to you on there........but there are lots of other companies offering this.........They make their money on people who forget to claim, and those going over their contracted minutes....and those who dont cancel after 11 months. I renew my phone every year and havent paid a penny for 4 years now....sorry I went over by 6 pence one month.....

Please (everyone) don't reply to this here.....As this forum is for Gas and Electricity..........although you can thank me here if you feel I've helped you.....

Pm me and I'll show you which forum to ask your questions in....
