Thanks for the warning bassman. I am currently searching for a new provider as my current provider which is powergen has increased my monthly DD effective 01/08/06 to £78 from £36. Shocking isn't it. I went to energyhelpline website and Southern Electric came out the cheapest. You were right that the last time they have increased their price was about 4 months ago. Are they likely to increase prices again? How many times a year does these companies allowed to increase their prices?

    Cheers

Feel free to hit the "thanks" button.......lol

If you wish to see the changes from every single supplier have a look at:

http://www.energylinx.co.uk/energy_price_updates.htm this is kept up to date by the hour - you will also see this at: http://www.energylinx.co.uk/fifteen/

Yes...they should advise you before changing the direct debit, and unless you were being greatly undercharged before the 100% increase seems a bit harsh.

    hiya,

This is one of my dafter questions:

I have just moved into a new place, and am getting stuff together piece by piece...washing machine then cooker then fridge etc...So, when will I know what my average usage will be?

At the minute, scottish power are touting themselves for me to stay with them.
Will I have to wait till I get all my electrical stuff in and have been using it for maybe a month?

    many thanks,

    yogi

I would say it would take a full year to work out your average usage. Direct debit (monthly) payments are based on a year's consumption, divided by 12....which takes into account heavy use in the winter and lighter use in the summer................ I suppose you could guesstimate your use by taking readings at the beginning and end of a full month when you have all your appliances in regular use.....Try and pay a bit more if possible....to avoid a bombshell later in the year. All people have different needs, so really you can't even go and ask your neighbour.........hope this helps

I have tried several of these switching sites in recent month as Scottish Power have increased my DD (electricity only) from £18 last June to £43.50 now.

All of these sites say they cannot find any company who can do it any cheaper, but how can they know? All they ask is the postcode and what I pay now, they don't ask for any further information, not even the size of the house, so their figures are wild guesses.

We have a small bungalow with only 2 of us and no electric heating, water heating or cooking and I cannot see how we should be paying that much. An increase of 250% in a year is criminal.

Supposedly....when you tell them your postcode and your current supplier and the amount you pay.....they divide the unit cost of your gas/elec into the amount you pay....from this they find out your usage, then multiply it by the prices charged by the other suppliers in your area....then deduct any discount those suppliers give and then let you know which is better or worse..........if you'd like to tell me your postcode, who you are with now, and the amount of gas and elec you pay now.....I'll have a look for you....you can PM me if you want to kep it private...
