Depends,If you already have cable installed then it's just a matter of connecting up the street cabinet & the box, adjusting the signal levels & getting the hit to activate the box.
If it's not been installed before, they will have to run a siamese drop cable which is coax & telco cables joined together, from the street cabinet up to your house, you're looking around 2-3 hours for that depending on the size of the house.

thanks spike, i dont think cable has been to my house but keep getting leaflets dropped that they've upgraded our area.
do they have to dig up the drive to run cables?

If you have a grass garden, then they'll splice the grass & run it up that way,all you'll see is a track about 6in wide where they've spliced it,(you put the spade into the grass & 'lever' a v shaped notch in the ground & push the cabling in a protective flexy duct into the splice then tread the grass back down)
Any tarmac or cement is given a 2inch wide sawcut & reinstated with the right material, slabs & block paviers are usually lifted & replaid.
When it reached the house wall,a grey box about the side of a VCR cassette is mounted on the wall. Then the Coax for the TV & Broadband & Telco are ran from there to where they are needed, either internally or externally. The phone point can be put whereever you want it & the TV/Bband service the is a small white box mounted on the wall called an Isolator.
The will be a small square plastic cover outside on the pavement (or if a new built home,it may be right outside the front window) about 4inch square which is the point from which the installers rod the drop in order to get the cable to your home.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

I've been considering this for a while and after seeing the HD for free ad thinking about giving them a call tomorrow - We've been virgin customers for nearly 10 years now so hoping there will be no charge for the V+ box
Best of luck, I too have been a Virgin customer for more than ten years and am currently on XL for broadband, TV and phone. I've tried to get them to give me a v+ box several times but they will not budge on the installation charges which vary every time I call. I recently was quoted three different figures over the course of three days, they couldn't process the first quote as their systems were down, and I eventually gave up as the information was different every time I called. Beware if they offer you a seemingly good deal as they will probably only give you it on the condition that you keep your existing set top box as well, in another room, and will charge £5.50 a month for the privilege. I'd love to hear how you get on!

I called Virgin Media yesterday, requesting my free V+ HD box.

    It wasn't a success.

Makes their multi-millions pound 'V+ HD for Free' advertising campaign look a little foolish.

They said it would be free if I could pay a £75 'activation fee'.

Their generosity extended to waiving the £49 'set-up fee' and the £35 'installation fee'.

So yes - free with the exception of a £75 payment.

It's a tribute to our nation when those with very manifest learning difficulties are so openly embraced into the working population.

I'd love to be Richard branson's plumber:

    "Yeah, that is the charge - £18 - plus £200 wrench-fee, £140 duct-tape charge, £80 plunger levy and £300 to-tolerate-your-silly-beard payment."

    Dicks.

A quality post Lestergun. That really made me laugh.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that got a surprise when VM explained what I would be charged.

After reading this thread I phoned Virgin today to say that as a customer for over ten years I was thinking of leaving in favour of Sky and what could they offer me to make me stay?

I was offered the free V+ HD Box with no installation or set up fees , sure they upped my package by £5.00 for the extra channels but as i signed up to pay by Direct Debit , which i wanted to do anyway , my monthly charges stay the same

I was very surprised I got anywhere with this but glad I tried!
And in the middle of the flood I felt my worth

When you held onto me like I was your little life raft
Please know that you were mine as well

Drops of water hit the ground like God's own tears
And spread out into shapes like
Salad bowls and basins and buckets for bailing out the flood
