one hung parliament in 63 years and its a regular occurence--PR are will never happen --the tories and the labour supporters will vote down any referundum

I said I think it will more likely happen in the future and gave my reasons why :) Times they are a-changing and all that :p

Conservatives and Labour supporters may well vote PR down - although I wonder why both parties were so anti a referendum on full PR then?

The Conservatives have just had 13 years in the wilderness and even now with a massively unpopular goverment could not gain a Majority, Labour had 20 years before that - I'll bet some red and blues may not be so against PR as you think :p

In the old style of politics red v blue, yes I agree with you.

I'm hoping a new style is coming in - one where minority parties work with the majority party so one term might have Labour and LibDem working together and another Conservatives and LibDem - or even a much more fluid system where MPs vote a lot more with their conscience (or rather more representative of their constituents).

i'd like pr. not so sure about the av system. i can see why the lib dems have supported it because they have traditionally been many people's second choice. although not anymore i suspect. however i don't see why having to make a second choice makes parliament more representative. surely what we all want is representation for our first choice.

i think the next vote will be totally polarised and tories never have voted liberals but liberal voters have been portrayed will go to labour--i dont think this arrangement will last long-if it does the tories will have to do all the dirty work about the economy and they will be more unpopular than the lot that have just lost-
-they dont like PR because it would mean a democracy where the 2 main parties dont pass the power to each other--a lot of people want to now vote green and it would ignite such parties to action --the Lib dems place in politics is now vacant

The LibDems want PR for the simple reason that they get roughly a quarter of the votes each time translated to less than 10% of the seats.

Now whether those votes will stay the same with PR in place is another thing.

AV is a stepping stone to PR

I disagree but it's a plausible scenario - we'll just have to see how this Government pans out and what the voters do. We all know what we would do individually but masses and crowds are a funny thing, you would think they would be predictable and yet they often are not despite acting as a single entity on occasion.

They asked dc what the line will be on PR if there is a referendum--he spluttered and waffled about it being a complicated matter etc etc

Interestingly Labour has to rethink where it stands. Many voters have known little more than New Labour. Whereas the true roots of the Labour party are more left than the middle ground than Blair positioned it. Now that the two architects of New Labour have gone. Will Milliband be allowed to continue with the ethos of NL or will more traditional views gain the upper hand.

PR may be the answer even for the Labour party.
