If you get the chance to do EPSRC Grad Schools, take it. I didn't get the chance despite being EPSRC funded, but wish I'd pushed to get on one. Everyone I now work with who went on one said they got some excellent advice.

Similarly, EPSRC funded students should have the chance to go on at least one overseas conference. Don't miss out - not only is it a free trip abroad, but its a great chance to find out the latest advacnes in your field

I went on an EPSRC grad school, based on careers, I had loads of fun and it helped me get more of an idea on what I wanted to do.
Also went on two conferences abroad, one EPSRC funded and the other was funded by the RSC. Don't be afraid to find out if you can get funding from RSC or whatever your society is. Everyone I know that applied for the bursary to go to the conference got it. I think you can also get travel bursary's aswell, it's always worth looking.
  • I find the thing that helps me the most with dealing with stress is exercise. I've been going to circuits and while I've been writing as a break I've been dancing/doing aerobics to my favorite music (only probably works if you like dancing :j ) and then getting back to work. I also like to listen to music while I'm writing, it keeps my brain happy so it can do work (I know some people have to work in silence but I can't). While I was in the lab I used to go to aerobics or badminton straight after uni on most weekday evenings which enabled me to relax when I got home.
I don't know why but tv seems to stress me out more, but I still can't stop myself from slobbing out in front of the tv in the evening;)
I hope this is of help

Yes, I'd forgotten about RSC Grants. The travel for my overseas conference was part funded by the RSC. Two would have been nice, but as my one was in Beijing, it felt cheeky to try and get on another when some of my contemporaries didn't go further than Cambridge (we studied in Norwich).
If at first you do succeed, try not to look too surprised

:rotfl: We appreciate the finer things in life...trust me, I'm appreciating how small RNA is right now.

Don't you ever sleep btw? thought you were at the lab all night last night.

I was still in the lab when I wrote that at 6am :wall: it's great fun - nobody's around. :D What were you doing with RNA then you silly little molecular biologist? :p(get it? little? it's a pun :D)
    What about biochemists!?

I'm a clinical biochemist ;) biochemists are ok. Not biologists though :rotfl:

Are you doing a PhD too? If so, what is it in? (if you say genetics/immunology, I will hunt you down!!)
    What about vascular physiologists?!

I don't know - what about them? :rotfl: Congrats on the good news :T Now on to a career with extremely high salaries... ;)
