https://www.findaphd.com is quite good. Nothing really beats asking around though.

I just found https://www.findapostdoc.com, anyone on here ever used it?
not used the postdoc site (not finished the phd yet!) but i do know that my uni seems to prefer advertising on the 'finda' websites over jobs.ac.uk. no idea why or whether that applies to other places though!

Hi, I've come to the end of my 3rd year and I'm trying to write up but finding it really hard to motivate myself. I've moved in with my boyfriend so he's supporting me which sounds great but it means I've got to finish asap which rather than motivating me seems to slow me down, I just feel alot of pressure. I can't talk to him about it because I know he'll be disappointed in me and I just want him to be proud of me. We're getting married next year so I can't afford to spend too long without a job, but all these things still can't get rid of my mental block. I've tried setting myself deadlines but as they are not real they don't work. I really can't wait to finish, but I never will if I don't get into gear.

Has anyone else experienced this and what did they do to sort it out?
  • Deadline day for our Uni is tomorrow! I am so relieved nearly to have the writing out of the way.

    Yes, all of the above.

The support dries up as well when everyone else is sick of it too

Sheer slog and determination will get you through. Just keep on keeping on. You'll get there ... consider the alternative

I'm feeling alot better now, once I'd written my post I felt alot calmer and was able to get on with a load of work. I just needed to get it off my chest to someone impartial.:T

I'm new to this so I hope it works. I'm in a similar situation so your not alone, if it was easy it wouldn't be worth doing.;)

    Hello leni and chemgirl!

I'm suffering late night insomnia at the moment worrying about my experiments. I go on holiday in 2 weeks for 3 weeks and plan to start writing up but have a bad feeling that I won't be able to start according to plan....

Now, if only my supervisor would return from his summer holiday!!

My favorite trick in trying to get the pressure off is to do something that I wouldn't normally do! Take a break, a few days off and do nothing. Sit, watch TV, go to a few gigs, just let your brain recover. When you're calmer, you can look at things in perspective.

Although perspective at 2:15am is a bit hard to find....:D
