From what I've been reading, Mandelson and Campbell have been using this situation to try to get David Miliband as PM to cement the Blairites in place for ever and to finally destroy Old Labour.

However, given that even Blairites such as Lord Falkener, John Reid etc etc were dead against it suggests to me that Mandelson's influence in the Labour Party may be at an end.

So how this will play out will depend on whether Labour can act like grown-ups and how successful the Conservative Democrat government (assuming a coalition occurs) ends up being. An advantage for Cameron if he is a true moderniser is that he can now tell his backwoodsmen to go to heck.

The 10k tax thing had been suggested by Osbourne a while back I think and then dropped from Tory plans. But he is in favour of tax simplification so it may be possible. Currently these people are taxed, and then credited in a maze of complex regulation. So 10k tax free - not such a big deal for anybody I suggest. I wonder what the expected cost of it is - might even be neutral.

no i do believe it. absolutely priceless to see the tories have to vote in leftwing policy. genius. now you can be sure if labour had tried to put that sort of policy through the tories would have been rabid.

It would be priceless to see true left-wing tax policy from 'New' Labour too, we've seen tax rises for the poor, radically lower capital gains tax and much higher inheritance tax thresholds under them. Seems a lot like pandering to Tory Middle England to me...

The finest in a 90 years, make up for all those years of 25% of the voting public nd handful of seats. The Tories better watch out the last time we had a Liberal PM it was in coalition with Tories, they never got in again, could the reverse happen this time icon7.gif

Clarke into 2 from 4 in Betfair now 3.05 (in seconds) must a have been false, although I can see the LibDems not wanting Georgie as Chancellor.

Georgie drifted slightly to 1.6, just maybe a perfect day, a reduction of booze tax :j

only if they have children. but afaik the lib dem proposal was for everyone (even the - shock horror - childless). if they are watering it down to only be for families/married people then that's just a con.

We'll probably never know but if the Lib-Dem negotiations with Labour brought this concession about then it was worth it.
