A Con-Lib Dem coalition could be a dream ticket for Cameron. He can now beat up his right-wing and use the Lib Dems as his stick. It's good news for 'one nation' Tories and all those who want balanced, non-partisan politics in Britain. If AV wins out in a referendum, as I expect, it will be the icing on the cake for this new politics. This is a great historic moment for Britain. Sad that the hard-right Tories are still spewing venom against Clegg; the man was only doing the right thing, he could hardly just ignore the other side as he needed to show his party that ALL options had to be considered.

and what is clegg going to do about his very large left wing? 75 percent of mps and peers have to vote in favour of the deal. they start a meeting tonight apparently which should be over by 9pm. if they don't get 75percent they have to go to the party membership.

even if 25 percent vote against that's over 12 lib dem mps who aren't going to be happy to follow orders. be interesting to see how long this 'historic moment' could last.

Con-Lib could be a good way to take some of the slightly worrying (for some) rough edges off Tory policy

Equally it could be a disaster - but it looks like we may well get to find out!!

If they can't agree with their leader they should not govern anyway.

    nice stalinist philosophy that.

the lib dems are founded on breakaway factions. shirley williams et al. not known for towing the party line.

in fact here she is now showing a terrible lack of forelock touching...

My reckoning is that the MPs will back the deal. There is no other deal on the table and AV is a significant step towards full PR. They would be mad to refuse.

not really. for some it will mean sleeping with the enemy. and others like shirley won't want a formal coalition. you can't force people to do things they don't agree with.

Tribal politics and the associated bickering and complaining is baffling. People forget that every 'party' is a coalition too. You can only come to the conclusion that very few politicians are interested in doing what's in the wider interests of the Britain people.

1700: "In the last two days the Conservative party has had two meetings, the Lib Dems three and continuous email contact. Labour has had none," writes disgruntled-sounding Labour MP Austin Mitchell, on his blog. "We are to have one Wednesday 2.30pm by which time it will probably be all over. No need to consult us when all the decisions can be taken by Mandy and Campbell. They know things so much better than the peasants and workers."

A fair bit of rebuilding to do for Labour I should think...

and there were a few tory mps who defected to labour in the years after 1997. mercenary politicians basically. wonder if they'll switch back again?
