I thought that the Lib-Dems going into negotiations with the Tories would be a bit like the Christians & the Lions. However, as a mate pointed out, they have waited for decades for this opportunity and its no surprise that they are playing their hand well.
The Tories of course were so over confident about getting a majority that their only fall back plan was sucking up to the Ulster parties.
My guess is that the Lib-Dems will jump into bed with the Tories today or tomorrow, and this horse trading of the last few days will be forgotten about.
Lib Dems get a lot of what the wanted bar Trident.
They may be able to claim AV, £10k tax allowance and scrapping of ID cards.
As for the seethers on here saying they will never now put the Lib-Dems down 2nd after the Tories under AV - you have to laugh.
Where are they going to go, UKIP, BNP ?
Anywhere but Lib/dem - we always have the choice of about 6 or more here.0 -

it looks like the tactical voting didn't really work out how they expected it to.... :rotfl:
Its the arrogance of seeing themselves as the "natural party of power", and suddenly realising that they are led by a couple of donkeys, and the Lib Dems are running rings round them.US housing: it's not a bubble

Funny to read most of these stupid and bitter posts from Tory diehards. Clegg is doing the only thing he can under the circumstances: talk to both Conservatives and Labour. he cannot do anything else. Why should he hand over power to Cameron on a silver platter? He would be stupid to do that.
I don't believe there should be a referendum on AV because this system is merely an adjustment of the existing FPTP arrangement, not proper proportional representation. AV would give slightly more seats to the Lib Dems, but it is still not a properly representative electoral system. Referendums need to be kept for really radical, fundamental changes and AV does not fit the bill. STV is a proper PR system and in this case a referendum would be appropriate.0 -
The Tories have put themselves in a bit of a weak position through some fairly poor judgement.
Sums up their whole campaign, to be honest....“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Tories here just have to face the fact that if they wanted their agenda to be put into force in full, they should have won a parliamentary majority. This is democracy in action. The message of the outcome of the election is that the parties have to come to an agreement amongst themselves.
Brown is on his way out, so the frothy-mouthers have got their way. Perhaps they just need a new bogeyman for their OTT hate-fest?Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Galbraith0 -

At the end of the day, the Tories need to stop whinning that the system is unfair. Of course it is. Liberal Democrats have been telling you that for years. This is the system you (the tories) want, and it is unfair. Stop whinning.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
