I only left my jute bags in the boot of the car twice before I got into the habit of taking them into the shop with me.

If you don't like the quality of the bags given away, take your own.

the checkout operator has to ask if you would like a bag, the bags are removed to remind people to re use ones frm home

This used to be the case in all the supermarkets round here but for about the last 6 months they are just as they used to be (i.e hundreds of them hung up beside the till and even more lying in the packing bay.)

For me I think they should charge for carrier bags as M&S do. If you don't like the quality of the free ones then you can always bring your own bags.

    This is So true !

My wife returned from tescos last week and 7 bags split and broke walking the couple of meters from the car to the front door, most of our shopping ended up all over the path way, I couldn't believe just how terrible these were, its a disgrace !
We holding them like a new born baby and the bl00dy things were still falling apart !

This week I went with her, a doubled up every single bag, the women behind the till actually had a moan i was being wasteful ! , I told her about the situation last week and she said "you should bring you own bags then" ...... my response was "No, Im purchasing about £100 worth of shopping thanks, the least you can do is provide me with 2pence worth of bags that will last a 2 meter journey !!!"

Probably worth just taking the trolly home with you, just chuck the whole thing in your boot ! lol

It's not about stiffing you for a few bags though stuart, it's about the environment.

The one that does annoy me is the fact that their green clubcard points for reusing your bags is a right swindle. I can get two carriers' worth in one of my reusable bags - yet I only get credited with reusing one bag for my points.
    Swindle I tell you!

Don't think much of them but I do try not to use them!

the only thing Tesco's thin carrier bags encourages me to do is use 2 of them and double bag my shopping.

I have had the same problem with the bags from Tesco. On my last visit 3 bags did not make it from my car into the house, 1 broke before I got it out of the car and the other 2 before I got into my front door.

Yes it would be great if we all reused bags for the sake of our environment. I do sometimes take some to the supermarket. I like free bags I find that I re-use supermarket bags anyway before using them in my bin and I am only going to have to buy bin linners anyway.
Maybe if supermarkets looked at what they packaged food in then landfills would have less.
Anyway as Tim Minchin would sing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqN-qroE4ZQ
