Eons £187 for 3 weeks electric????

someone tell me this isnt right???

I brought my new barrat home and moved in on the 1st Feb this year. I accounted for all bills with my financial advisor and was assured that i have over estimated all my bills so that i would be able to cope. My electric bill was to never to amount to anymore than £50 per month according to my advisor.

I brought a brand new 2 bed ground floor apartment. I live on my own and it is all electric - no gas and is on Economy 7.

When i moved in, i immediately switched to Atlantic as they had a deal for me which was £23 per month which was estimated usage, so i let them take over. Eon were the original electric providers and provided my electric from 1st Feb until 4th march as to when Atlantic took over.

At the end of April i was sent a "final demand" notice explaining that i owed Eon £187 for the time between 1st Feb and 4th March. I have been quiering it for weeks and have been on the phone non stop sending meter reading etc but i am being told that this is the correct amount and about right for a 2 bed apartment.

Someone tell me this isnt right as i cannot afford £150 on top of what i budgeted for. I would have never brought the place if i have had know this. I should have been told right from the start.

Does anyone else pay this much for electric?

I have storage heaters but i never have them on as ive been in fear of the bill if i do switch them on. After the bill from Eon, im glad i never had them on as it would probably been twice the price :-( Can someone help?

    That isn't right.

You will pay for the amount you consume as registed by your meter.

What was the start readings when you moved into the property?
What were the final readings on the day you transferred supply to Atlantic?

Do you have meter readings when you moved in and what it is now

Regardless of how much you pay per month that doesn't always reflect usage

You either pay too much for energy, consuming too much, they made a mistake or have a fault with meter which is very unlikely

aparently all the reading are right :-(

    1st Feb - 14014 and 02252 total 16266 1st Feb day i moved in
5th March - 14974 and 02444 total 17418 5th March Atlantic took over from Eon
    28th April - 16285 and 02709 total 18994
    06th May - 16444 and 02736 total 19180
    08th May - 16478 and 2746 total 19225

by that, i calculate the average daily usage to be approx 20 units per day.

What does everyone else think? I am thinking of contacting the ombudsman. It just seems a lot of money. I leave nothing on stand by, everythings switched off. I have a fan assisted oven i use every evening, washing machine once and maybe twice a week, 1 shower every day, use my kettle once in the morning :-(

    Oh man :-(

You need to get the meter reading from the day you took over the property, How much electric did the builder use and was it used through your meter ?

Without the meter reads no can really help you as we don't really know the whole story.

I'm unsure what the two meter readings you have given are. The first reading, is it for your heating and water? According to the readings you used 960 units in 34 days (first meter 14015-14974). It's unlikely you used that on tv, cooker etc so it must be heating. Averaged over it's 28 units a day. I have all electric heating and in the coldest part of winter am using about 60 units a day for a 3 bed house so for yours 28 could be right. What do you do for hot water? If you have the immersion on all day it will use up a lot of electric.

the bigger reading is the daytime and the smaller reading is the nightime.

When i took over on 1st Feb, the reading was 16266 in total for day and night. and i have been billed by Eon from this reading.

Nearly £200 a month for an apartment just seems excesive :-(

Also, you can see that the number of units you are using is going down as the winter changes to spring and you turn off the heating. You must expect to use more power in the cold of winter when it's gets dark earlier and you have lights on in the evening etc.

When you changed to Atlantic did you actually compare the price for the electricity or just think they were cheaper cos their direct debit was cheaper? As someone else has already said it doesn't matter how much or little you pay by direct debit. You will owe them for all the electric you use even if it works out at £1000's more than your monthly direct debit.

If the bigger reading is the daytime then it might be that they are the wrong way round? Did you have the heating on much during February because 192 units for a month's heating is unlikely imo. It certainly looks to me that the meters are being billed wrongly ie 14xxx is the heating and 02xxx is for daytime.

Maybe they got the readings the wrong way round.

How to check if they are being billed incorrectly?
Well, I'm pretty sure that one meter will kick in when your econ 7 period begins, while the other will stop. Have a look at your meters - which one is going round right now? This is the one recording daytime rate elec.
