Alot of the 'rules and regs' make sense - MOT testers have to abide by them regardless - they not are allowed to use common sense, if they do, they could lose their licence and jobs... so don't pick on them if they seem 'picky'.

  • The requirements are different for front doors than for rear doors. In November last year neither my front nearside door nor the rear nearside door could be opened from the outside (a common spring breakage problem with Discoverys) It failed MOT on the front door but the rear was only an advisory.

There is no reason, that I can see, why your rear seat passengers can't get out of the passenger side door.

The passenger door could be wedged up against a tree after a crash or wedged onto another car? That would make it hard for rear passengers to get out?

Could you remove the rear seat and pass?

No rear passengers to worry about if there's no rear seat? :rotfl:

If you remove the rear seats do you have to advise the DVLA?Its something I am considering on a project car.

I would advise writing to the DVLA and asking the question. I have found them quite helpful.

I used to have a k-reg Polo with that problem but it never failed the MOT for it. That was a few years ago now though so it might have been toughened up.

My sister's clio failed for this reason last week, despite it being broken for the past 3 years and passing each of these years.

Recommend you ask VOSA. They are the ones in control here!
