I've just rechecked this on http://www.bbc.co.uk/aboutthebbc/licencefee/howtopay.shtml
where it says "You need a TV licence to use any television receiving equipment – such as a TV set, set-top box, video or DVD recorder, computer or mobile phone – to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV."Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.0 -
Found confirmation "So, you need a licence to watch any channel live online, but you wouldn’t need one to use BBC iPlayer to catch up on an episode of a programme you missed, for example." at http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/technology-top8/
Phew. I would hate to tell OH he needed to get a TV license to watch his weekly Dr Who episode tomorrow.
We actually do ensure we don't watch live TV on any of the online players. Only thing that caught me out recently was a BBC news link on the election which I clicked to find it had an embeded video which appeared to be showing BBC news so I closed it as I assumed it could be live.Debt at highest: £8k. It is a bit strange with all the different rules. So why don't you have a TV - is it just the fee?"Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

We moved into a house which had been reposessed. On the way out, along with smashing light sockets, removing doors, making holes in the ceilings, removing the sink etc, the owners cut the co-axil (?spelling) cable that comes from the roof ariel into the house. It taps on the upstairs window in the right wind
We had lots to be getting on with and I had no intention of having OH climb a large ladder (assuming we could borrow one tall enough) to fix it. So, we put the TV on the side and lived without it. We agreed, after some time, we didn't really miss it, so the other year I took the TV to the tip, after finding no-one on freecycle wanted a large 1980s TV
I just have no need for a TV - I can get news on the radio and online, I can go out to a pub for sports matches I want to watch live, and I make a social occasion of doing that. I only really want one a few times a year. I don't miss watching lots ogfTV that only stays in your head a few hours. I've been in hotels quite a bit lately with work, watched TV and would struggle to remember what I watched only a few days later, so I just think a lot of it is missable.
I also like having a front room with no TV - looks far nicer with a computer desk clearly :rotfl:Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.0 -

Co-axial. Or Co-ax as everyone calls it...We had lots to be getting on with and I had no intention of having OH climb a large ladder (assuming we could borrow one tall enough) to fix it. Really? I thought someone would have loved a TV that looked like a goldfish bowl... (for those that remember those adverts...)I just have no need for a TV - I can get news on the radio and online, I can go out to a pub for sports matches I want to watch live, and I make a social occasion of doing that. And a 150 quid buys quite a bit of beer...I don't miss watching lots ogfTV that only stays in your head a few hours. I've been in hotels quite a bit lately with work, watched TV and would struggle to remember what I watched only a few days later, so I just think a lot of it is missable.

That's because we're on it..."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

So I need to buy you £150 of beer?
I agree tho, I just don't feel it is worth £150 and having the ugly giant TV in the room for the use I would make of it. We also felt if it wasn't there we could not watch it mindlessly. I like using the net, chatting to DH and listening to the radio instead.

After all, with a TV I might miss out surfing online and discover great articles like this quote from the Times - some overpriced shopping/crafts: "...playful, elegant white porcelain lemon squeezer (£45) and cauliflower vase (£80.....)"
How can I decide between them? What could be nicer than a cauliflower vase? Do I display cauliflowers in it?Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.0 -

My Dad refers to it as the idiot lantern - the flickering starts and all the idiots turn to drool at it. But he is very much a radio man. I bought him a DAB radio and he's very happy with it.I like using the net, chatting to DH and listening to the radio instead.
Well the net is interactive, unlike the receive-only TV."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

Some expensive things are worth having - I have a very expensive (?£30?) washing up bowl from when we got married which is made of rubber so can be adjusted to fit in annoying pan handles etc and will last indefinitely, but that is not in the same league.Debt at highest: £8k.
