that's probably why they had it for 6 weeks. Pretty difficult to fix a computer if you can't get into it.0 -
stebiz wrote:You might have a point. However would it not also be against the Human Rights Act to look at the history of someones net access without their permission. Absolute crackers I know - but would you think the Crown Prosecution Service could get this to court?? I doubt it......don't you!!! I mean it could have been a cleaner, member of public (whilst engineer is on his break), who knows and more importantly can it be proven. Would you own up to it???

Obscene Publications Act can be used to cover pornography - it really depends on the type of !!!!!!, though. There are laws in place that define what type of !!!!!! can be viewed in the UK.In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

You will have a difficult job proving anything, unless you have found files that are time and date stamped maybe, and as it is your computer, then you will be prime suspect for anything on it, unless you can prove yourself not guilty, and I am being serious.0

put it this way someone who worked for a mobile company left some dodggy images on a phone when it got sold to the customer the customer got over a grand in comp, aparently could have got upto 7
i would def make a formal complaint, idiots, i mean if they are able to over ride the pword which i dont think is hard to do they should have at least not left a trace you shouldnt have to explain that stuff to your family,
even if you dont ask for comp, ask for a formal apology
its worth a shot, pc world shouldnt be able to just deny this as for a date stamp i know there is like a register of whats accessed on the internet - my blokes been able to look up on pcs whatever websites have been accessed dont know if it will carry a date tho
i know the police have forensic computer experts who are able to pinpoint times so just threaten the manager with that maybe - its a long shot but heyYes Your Dukeiness0 -
Why not run the index.dat program posted by Browntoa? Take a printout of the results. I see from screenshots that this program gives dates the pages were accessed.
Take the printouts, and go talk to the manager of PC World. Tell him you are very distressed about this, and you don't want to bring the computer back to them again because of a lack of trust, plus you don't want to leave your computer with them for so long again.
Decide what you are asking for before you talk to him. Do you want an apology, or are you after some form of compensation?
If he refuses to help in any way, explain to him that your next move will be to send a copy of this file to his head office. Explain very clearly that all the sites visited from your (and any computer) from their connection could be double checked either through their router logs, or through their ISP records. These further records should give sites visited, the date they were viewed, and the time they were viewed.
Unless you have come accross something that you suspect is illegal (normal !!!!!! is not illegal). Don't bother wasting the police, or you time. If you do report this to the police, and they suspect a crime. You may lose you computer for another few months (this could take a very long time depending how busy they are) while they check out the activity on it.
As far as six weeks to repair a computer...........It only takes a few hours to build a computer from scratch. Unless they were waiting for a hardware component to come back from the manufacturer, I can't see any reason why it would take this long. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

......PC brigade not welcome on here. (We come on here to ESCAPE such people)
Sorry to appear naive, isn't everyone welcome on here, isn't this a public forum where people seeking advice can ask and receive constructive information?
I didn't realise that everyone's views had to be uniform and match your own.
Personally I would contact the store manager and ask for an explanation, explaining in the light of the recent Gary Glitter incident you are concerned and that you think that the media may be concerned too. If that doesn't send a bundle of vouchers flying your way, nothing will.
First of all though I would check the dates the information was accessed using the prog mentioned above and verify that there is no other explanation as to who accessed the material.0 -
Interesting this as my computer came back from a spell in pc world with a porno page logged into my favourites. I thought it was the kids who swore blind it wasn't. I am really pretty sure it wasn't there when it went in but didn't think to post here. Too late now but I guess its worth checking when it comes out.0

If there are any illegal images on your pc then it doesn't matter who put them there, it will always be the pc owner that's prosecuted, if it doesn't seem fair then you're getting the drift of what the RIP Act is."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Please let us know when you find the dates - I for one am fascinated. I've had to sack staff in the past for inappropriate use of work computers where there's been a VERY clear policy, so know a lot of it goes on!Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

So was the OP ACTUALLY "Distressed", "Offended", "Mentally Damaged" or had their "Cultural Sensitivities Offended" due to what they ACTUALLY found on their PC ?
Or did the OP SUSPECT that "something", "might" have happened, but is not sure what, if or when, and in fact has NOT ACTUALLY been "Distressed" or "Offended", just mildly peeved ?
In which case, where are we when people are suggesting that the OP exagerates/tells half truths/blantantly lies about the situation to get cash or compensation out of PC World for an offence that didn't happen ?
And if this is the way of the world, then we can hardly complain the next time some chancers in the real world sue for compensation when coppers raid their house wearing shoes which "offends their culture", or a prison officer hurts the feelings of a "guest/customer" by referring to them as a "criminal", and you pay for the compensation out of YOUR tax and YOUR public service funds ? :rotfl:0
