    Can you seriously get £1,300 per month in housing benefits? That's more than my current wage!!! :eek:

    When you did the entitledto quotation; did you do it on just 2 adults, or 2 adults and a child under 1? Don't forget, once the baby is here you should get an additional £100 for the baby for the first year and £80 a month child benefit.

    And as for finding a landlord to take HB.. don't tell them. You are working and a private tenant; the HB can be paid to you direct and the landlord doesn't need to know. The only time I think they need to be advised is if you went on benefits 100% as that could affect their insurance (or so I read).

    Thats not a very helpful comment now is it? If it wasn't for the pure greed of this country and house prices; speculators and BTL'ers pushing up house prices, then maybe this 18 year old could afford to get a rental or even a mortgage without having to bankrupt himself. So I am sorry; if you have to get LHA because that is the only way to provide for yourself and your family then I am all for it. The only way round this is for interest rates to rise and house prices to crash back down to a normal level of affordity = less people claiming LHA. Simple really. I bet you have a house with lots of equity in it due to rising house prices.. if you do then you have no right to complain about others not being able to get on the property ladder and having no option but to turn to LHA. The government have allowed this crazy mess to get out of hand which means they have to pick up the pieces.

    Edited to day, I do think £1300 a month is OTT regarding rent; but as I don't live in London I can't comment really.

    IMHO there is nothing wrong with seeking help from LHA but I also do think that £1,300 pm in rent is excessive (even for London).

    I know for a fact that you can rent a 2 bed flat in one of the better parts of London for £800 to £900 (the area in question is Hatch end / Pinner - http://www.upmystreet.com/local/neighbours-in-ha5.html

    The council tax is around £1300 compared to £606 in Wandsworth (where I work). Not to mention how much extra I would have to pay for travel.

    It's just not viable.

    I was just giving you an example. However, for argument sake even if you do take it up and commute like most Londoners (the commute is c1 hour, which I personally think is reasonable) then the added cost of council tax £694 pa equates to an additional £57.83 pm and the cost of travel zone 1 to 5 is £169 pm, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and say you need zone 1 to 6 which is £182.80 pm the additional cost is £240.63. Using an average monthly rent of £850, that gives you a grand total of £1,141.13. (Calculation is Rent - £850 + CT - £108.33 + Travel - £182.80)

    Now assuming you go for the £1,300 pm property. Your council tax is £50.50 and you will have a bus pass to pay for which is £63.80 pm but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you will walk it to work so no travel cost. Your total cost (rent + council tax) is £1,350.50.

    That gives [STRIKE]you[/STRIKE] us the taxpayers a net saving of £209.37 per month which is a great £2,512.40 per year. I really would not like to go into how many hours I had to toil to pay that sort of tax in order to give you a lifestyle that you seem to think the society owes you and most certainly deem to be your birth right.

    Please do bear in mind that for every pound of tax wasted is not just costing me and others but also costing you personally. The money that is claimed has to come from somewhere, that somewhere is through tax either nationally or locally in the form of higher council tax. So the more you claim, the more the taxes are bound to go up by. I do hope that you bear in mind when you are looking at properties.
