Surely people could refrain from shopping for one day... I really hope they don't start opening, things are bad enough as they are!

I agree with you, I remember when shops in Scotland were closed on Boxing Day and a lot were closed on Jan 2nd, and look what has happened now, the majority of them are now open, it is only a matter of time when stores will be open on Christmas Day and New Years Day to cater for the selfish people who think that shop staff will be there for them at all times.Shop staff are just like any other worker and deserve a break.

Unless there is a change in the law then they can not open their main stores as it is against the law, just like opening for more than 6 hours on a Sunday. It will take more than them getting an alcohol license to allow them to open.

The shops in Scotland don't have the '6 hour' restrictions, stores in Scotland have opened on Sundays for decades.

To the people complaining that Sunday trading is stopping you from spending the day at home with your family - it doesn't stop my family, so the only thing stopping you is you. Think about that the next time you try to dictate what people can and cannot do with their time.

Christmas is a British tradition, which is a combination of various pagan and christian religous events spanning 100's and thousands of years...so there has allways been some sort of celebration/festival around that time of the year...

so there we have it... call it what ever day you want, christmas, december the 25th st nicholas day... its a HOLIDAY!!!!!! to celebrate... and bring familes together...and spend time together to make you appreciate the love and friendship of those close to you.....

So again i personally think... supermarkets should not be allowed to open on special days throughout the year....

Where do you get the idea that Christmas is a British tradition?

I think people would be happier and less stressed if they stayed away from the round of constant shopping anyway and took some time back for other things in life and after all, there isn't much people actually need to buy, it's just all want..

Fang - in London it's made the roads awfully busy having the shops open, so even if I avoid the shops myself it still impacts greatly on people, it took me 1.5 hours to get 10 miles across London the other Sunday to visit family - average time is an hour unless I go before the shops open..

No but it means some people have to work.

I have worked shifts, earlies, after's, nights for over 30 years and work Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day etc.....and your point is ?

You might be an exception? I used to work with the rosters for shift workers and the only people who actually wanted to work Christmas day were single and nothing to do and no family around - a very small minority - everyone else hated having to work and missed spending the day with their family/friends - and it was the same with New Year's Eve.

If the shops are allowed to open then personally I think we should go the whole hog and get rid of all the bank holidays and just have all businesses open including banks, offices etc. Maybe even the schools as well. If it ok for the shop staff to have to work then I can not see any argument why the banks can not open, or the council or any other business.

Wanting to work, and having to work is a bit of a luxury? many people work it and are paid overtime to do so, also there is never a problem passing on to someone a double time shift and a lot of people are happy to work it for the extra money, especially those with kids who are old enough to have left home, or stopped believing in santa, it's just another day of same crap, different date.
