ooo and by the way i think you are a total twonk for that remark.....
but i expect you made the comment for this type of response....
regardless of the religious meaning to those days..... even non-religious people totally agree for the shops to be closed.... and by the remarks in this thread, alot of people would like to go back to shops not being open on sundays too
I agree with this and geordie joe completely you twonk happy chappy
Its not about the people it all means nothing to being able to shop on these days it is about the poor sods that get bullied by non working management TO work on these day if they are allowed to open and then there is also tradition and family time and so on, is 363 shopping days a year no longer enough?????"You can measure a man's character by the choices he makes under pressure"Sir Winston Churchill0 -
Well then COOLTRICKERCHICK and UnderPressure - I too am a 'twonk'. How utterly charming!
Just because others have ideas far removed from yours it does not make them stupid/idiotic. Happy chappy may think that of you, but did not stoop to name calling. 'Be nice to all money savers' ring a bell?
Anyway...........................
I'm all for it.
This country is multi-cultural, whether welcomed/tolerated and I presume it will become a bigger melting pot as the years pass. Same as yet more 'BRITISH' (as in BRITISH meaning born/bred any colour/religion) will move to Spain, or wherever they opt for next.
These Bank Holidays are NOT British, they are Christian Holidays, although stolen. England is run by a government which should be secular. Religion and Politics should not cross paths. Therefore, the government should not dictate that Britain stops on the basis of a religious celebration. Who are they to dictate what non-Christians do?
Especially considering the ever decreasing and rapidly spiraling percentage of Christians in the country? The amount of 18-34 year old's who define themselves as Atheist or Agnostic grows daily.
How can we with those statistics, let a government dictate that shops over a certain size can not open on Christian Holiday's? Morrison's may not get a result, but it is highly unlikely that Christianity will be dictating when my children work. Time off for Religious worship or celebration should be a matter between employer and employee. If it does not change now, it is simply a matter of time.
That said-I think there should be at least one Bank Holiday, where EVERYTHING bar essential services are shut, so that the UK can have a national day of celebration.0 -

No, but by the same token it does not mean they are not stupid./idiotic. You can have a different idea to someone else and be stupid/idiotic.itsallinthemind wrote: »These Bank Holidays are NOT British, they are Christian Holidays, although stolen. They are the government, they dictate what every body does, regardless of religion. If they can't dictate what non-Christians do then what would happen?
The laws would say "Christians can't murder people, but who are we to dictate what non-Christians do, so you lot can murder who you like"
Same with any crime or anything else, non-Christians would be speeding up and down the roads as fast as their cars will go, only stopping to sell drugs to kids, or rape Christian women.
You'd have to carry religious ID, Shop assistants would ask to see it and say "Sorry, you're a Christian, I can't sell you booze after 4pm on a Sunday. You'll have to get a non-Christian to come in and buy it for you".itsallinthemind wrote: »Especially considering the ever decreasing and rapidly spiraling percentage of Christians in the country? But the amount of people who want to work or go shopping on christmas day is not increasing daily. Just because people are not religeous it doesn't mean they want to work/shop on days they regard as a public holiday. They may not care about religion, but they also don't want to go to work on those days.itsallinthemind wrote: »How can we with those statistics, let a government dictate that shops over a certain size can not open on Christian Holiday's?
Because most of us don't think of them as Christian holidays, to most of us they are just bank holidays. We don't care who died, came back to life, went up to heaven 2,000 years ago. We just know we don't have to work/shop that day.itsallinthemind wrote: »Morrison's may not get a result, but it is highly unlikely that Christianity will be dictating when my children work.
I agee, but only because Christianity doesn't dictate when you work, the government does.itsallinthemind wrote: »Time off for Religious worship or celebration should be a matter between employer and employee. If it does not change now, it is simply a matter of time.
You are completely wrong, most people don't worship on those days, they just enjoy the day off. It's got nothing to do with religion, it's just a day when the the government says your boss can't make you work, so you can count on having that day off.itsallinthemind wrote: »That said-I think there should be at least one Bank Holiday, where EVERYTHING bar essential services are shut, so that the UK can have a national day of celebration.
And that day is xmas day, so what the h*ll are you arguing about. You were right in your very first line, you are a Twonk.0 -

Sorry, this TOTALLY missed my point. My point was that the government should not be making decisions, based on ONE FAITH in what is now increasingly a multi or non faith country.
I agee, but only because Christianity doesn't dictate when you work, the government does.
Based on dated Christian festivals?

I did not say they did, I was referring to what it is seen as.
And that day is xmas day, so what the h*ll are you arguing about. You were right in your very first line, you are a Twonk.
Again you missed my point. A day of celebration, for ALL cultures, ALL faiths would be most welcome to me, to celebrate the fantastic mix which is now the United Kingdom.
As for arguing, I was not. I was partaking in discussion in a civilised manner, trying not to offend anyone. You however are offensive for inferring I am Stupid/Idiotic and a twonk.0 -
Christmas is a British tradition, which is a combination of various pagan and christian religous events spanning 100's and thousands of years...so there has allways been some sort of celebration/festival around that time of the year...
so there we have it... call it what ever day you want, christmas, december the 25th st nicholas day... its a HOLIDAY!!!!!! to celebrate... and bring familes together...and spend time together to make you appreciate the love and friendship of those close to you.....
So again i personally think... supermarkets should not be allowed to open on special days throughout the year....Work to live= not live to work0 -
its the staff i feel sorry for0

Don't you just love it when someone resorts to answering you inside your own quotes. They know they can't win, but think if they answer inside your quote then it will disappear when you reply, therefore you won't be able to reply to what they have written.
Well here goes, I'll answer your red text in blue, then leave it to you to reply.itsallinthemind wrote: »Originally Posted by geordie joe

Sorry, you missed my point. The government are NOT making decisions based on one faith. They are not making decisions, about bank holidays at all, they are simply leaving things the way they have been for years.
I agee, but only because Christianity doesn't dictate when you work, the government does.

No, based on historical data, historically we have not worked on xmas day and the government is just leaving things alone.
You are completely wrong, most people don't worship on those days, they just enjoy the day off. It's got nothing to do with religion, it's just a day when the the government says your boss can't make you work, so you can count on having that day off.

But nobody sees it as people worshipping on those days. Well a few twonks who jump on bandwagons and try to be PC without thinking things through might.

We are not talking about a day of celebration, religious or otherwise, we are talking about a guaranteed day off work. A day when your boss can't make you go to work.
And if you hadn't realised it, we already have one, it's called xmas day.itsallinthemind wrote: »As for arguing, I was not. I was partaking in discussion in a civilised manner, trying not to offend anyone. You however are offensive for inferring I am Stupid/Idiotic and a twonk.
I DID NOT INFER you were a twonk, I said quite plainly that you are a twonk.
As for trying not to offend anyone, you have offended all those who do not want to work on xmas day, and those are the majority.0 -

Incorrect. I did not answer within your quote for it to disappear as some tactic! I was just doing it for quickness, in a different colour text. Strange thing to suggest! There is no 'win', simply presenting a viewpoint.
I can not be bothered as you seem to be fired up, yet I presented my opinions and views in a calm manner.
So you are calling me a twonk because I have different views? I have NOT been offensive to those who do not want to work Bank Holiday's. I simply said that I disagree, much more polite than using derogatory terms about someones views or intelligence.0 -
I work in a cab office and more often than not work on Christmas Day. It is mainly people getting taxis to visit family or go out for Christmas lunch but I can guarantee 1 in 10 calls is someone asking if Asda's open. Same thing happens on bank holidays aswell. If people really wanted the service the supermarkets would find a way of making it happen even if it does mean trying to get the law changed.0

I can not see it happening for a long long time.
Working would have to be voluntary, as it is now as most large stores will have some staff in on Christmas Day, but I do not think that any store would get enough staff willing to work unless very large premiums were paid. The amount of trade would be very low as well.If you find you are drinking too much give this number a call. 0845 769 75550
