    Well, we'll see.

My prediction is that they will fire thousands of low paid council workers, increase tax on the poor via VAT, reduce peoples pensions, increase the pension age, and freeze the pay of Teachers, nurses, bin men, and admin staff, none of whoom are exactly well off.

We'll see whether my prediction is correct.

What do you think Labour and the Lib Dems would do differently?

I think they will do many of the same policies, but will do it over a longer period, allowing the austerity measures to bite slower and do less damage. I also think they will increase measures against tax avoidance, and will however you look at it increase the tax burden more. So you get pain spread out over a larger section of the population, and over a longer time.

What they also won't do is cut inheritance tax, and taxes on corporations, to make the deficit worse and so have to make the cuts to the public sector larger than any in British history.

Er not go for the inheritance tax giveaway so they have to find that cash from the less well off ???

Er not slash and burn for the sake of it and doing what theyve always done now not creating a double dip?

I know they're not going to cut inheritance tax, but I was referring to the post that said the Tories will raise VAT, raise the pension age, make public sector redundancies. If you think that the Lib Dems won't do that too you're just plain naive.

I doubt the pledge to eliminate tax avoidance is the panacea it is presented as being - why wouldn't Labour have closed the loopholes if it was so easy?

Because Labour have been wrapped up for too long trying not to be socialists and allowing all these lovely non-doms to slosh all thier wealth/debt around so the city would love them right back.

Debt isnt wealth and labour never learned that lesson until it was far too late ( arguably, at all)

We will introduce a new general anti-avoidance provision for corporation tax. The purpose of this provision will be to stop companies structuring their business in a particular way when their main objective is to reduce their corporation tax bill.

A common argument against such a proposal is that the cost for HMRC to administer such a provision would be extremely high and that HMRC are inadequately resourced for the service. In order to address this, we propose that companies requiring clearance and certainty over the tax treatment of a transaction will pay for the services of a specialist HMRC team at commercial rates (similar to professional services e.g. lawyers and accountants); this will be a revolutionary change to the HMRC services, drawing it closer to commercial practices.

This will be a field day for tax lawyers, far from certain it will raise billions. It will certainly increase regulation and red tape.
