What is a good child friendly breed of dog?

I have a westie, I can assure you not all of them are the same. He very rarely barks and is very well behaved thanks.
Dont tar all breeds from your limited experiences of them.0 -
My nan had a westie called whisky. One of my first memories (around 2 or 3) was walking around to her kitchen from the living room and there was whisky waiting for me, teeth showing, growling, ready to pounce :rotfl: and me quickly running away.Best Comp wins[/B]: , Holiday to Las Vegas worth £3K, £200 shoes, £130 ASOS voucher, £150 River Island Voucher, £100 Toni & Guy Voucher, £250 Red Letter Day Voucher, Holiday to NYC[/COLOR]0

The man down the road from me had one when I was a kid, couldnt look at it without it wanting to rip out your throat, however, Ive met a heck of a lot more friendly ones.
There are good and bad in every breed, depends on how you train them.0 -
My mum has had a couple of dogs - a westie (that went rogue!) and she currently has a Lhasa Apso (teeth as sharp as needles) and they were frankly quite scary! Was never scared of smaller dogs until I met those 2..
The dogs I used to be scared of were Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Rottweilers. Probably because I'd met some scary versions of them! Then I looked after a staffie one weekend (my boyfriend's dad's) and that was it - I loved him right away! He never actually left after that weekend and we've had him for about 2 years now.
I'm glad that happened as now I tend to take each dog as an individual and not form an opinion based on it's breed. I know also know a lovely Rottweiler called Rupert!0 -
The OP just wanted an idea of breeds, not blerdy lecturing on the whys and whatnots of bringing up a dog.
Also adding, not everyone likes Staffies. They might well be soft dogs or good with children. If thats all that mattered, noone would have any other breed.
Some people prefer smaller dogs, or bigger dogs. Dogs with longer hair or spots!!
Why is it that as soon as anyone asks about breeds, lots of posters try to shove Staffies onto them and beats them with a "Whats wrong with Staffies" stick if they turn round and say "No thanks"?
I wouldn't want a Staffie if it were the last dog going as I just don't like the look of them. Oh, and I can't stand Lhaso's either, so so ugly!0 -
We have a cross breed which was sort of rescue, as the woman was desperate with unwanted 8 pups, she has staffie in her along with lab and whippet...both her parents were crossbreeds.
Our son was 5 when we got her and she adores him now and he's not the gentlest nature but she takes it in her stride and licks him to death at any opportunity.0 -
I've got a westie, comes and lies on me when i'm sat on the couch. Plenty of room on the couch mind but he plonks himself on my lap all the same. Barks or growls at people going past but they're dogs after all not teddy bears - very territorial. Great tempermant though. My auntie had a westie, my cousin was a toddler at the time and put toothpaste all over the dog. The dog just stood there and let him!0

tell me about it, i asked for recommendations for any breed except staffies as i dont like them and the first reply wasnt ok, how about one of these 1000s of possible dogs it was "why dont you like staffies... they are lovely etc?"
i cant stand them, i dont like rotties or small yapper dogs either, nothing below knee height! lol0 -
If I was going to get a small dog, I'd go for a miniature schnauzer. We had one when I was growig up and he was just the right size lol. Very even tempered and loved nothing more than lying down at my feet to watch tv (except running on the beach but that's another story lol)0

No need to be annoyed about it curious george,
I was just genuinely interested in why, as I explained I didn't like them either before I had one, I thought this forum was for discussion, and the reason I never suggested other dogs, is because as I said, it's the dog, not the breed that counts. I do apologise if you think I was being ctirical because I genuinely wasn't.It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0
