Good for you!! And before anyone shouts at me again I am not being sarcastic I admire you for doing the best for your child!

My eldest daughter who is 12 is extremely intellegent and we are lucky enough that her school have recognised this and offers extra support to keep her challenged, she also attends 'gifted and talented' workshops held by a local university(through the school). My family are in no position at all to pay for private school ( I do not drink or smoke, I have a freeview box which is plugged into my not even flatscreen tv and drive a 7 year old car - to stop any assumptions being made ).

I simply believe all children should be recognised for the ability they have and not what school they have attended. I always tell my children that they can do anything if they work hard however it breaks my heart to think that they will have so many obsticles put infront of them just because of their background. I have good children who are intellegent, well mannered and have good morals, it is upsetting to think they will be classed as (quote philthebear) an 'ignorant chav'. Surely the real 'chavs' would not want to apply for university?

I agree that all children should have the opportunity, but - only go to University if they are intelligent enough so that it would actually benefit them. I went to University - but I came from a council house background. I didn't have any favours.

What annoys me is that intelligent and able pupils can't get University places because the Labour education policy means that those with a background like mine will get preference over those who come from a different background. That's not equal opportunity. But Labour knows that it's seen as the party of 'the poor and oppressed' so it can shout about how it is giving those children a chance.

In reality most of those 'poor' children are underachievers who drop out. Not all. And I'm all in favour of helping those who don't. I just simply don't see that being poor means you should be given preference over someone who isn't - or that you should be penalised for your parents having money (and in Labour's terms that apparently means having an income of more than £25,000 a year).

Still, if Dave and Nick eventually come to an agreement all that will be history.

There was a study several years ago that showed only a minority of people vote Liberal Democrats because they want them to win. It showed most votes for the Liberal Democrats are protest and/or tactical votes.

Now the Lib Dems are part of the government for the first time it will be interesting to see whether people will be willing to vote Lib Dem as a protest any more.

A thought that spring to mind was the majority of people who'd check out this site are those who need to save money. working people needing help any way they can. Those generally tend not to be Conservative voters....who tend to be far better off and dont need to access information offered on this site.

There was a poll on this site a while ago which asked which newspaper people read and the largest number of votes was for the Daily Mail  :( so I would say that there are certainly a large number of right-wing people on this site! (A theory which is backed up by reading many of the threads in the 'Money Savers Arms' section!

People that read this site are trying to save money and I would agree with sakara.

Hardly a bunch of wealthy landed toffs who follow fox hunting and believe Hitler was a hero.

It is true the University standards have dropped and most young people now can get a place.

I've got say I agree with tuition charges and can't understand what the problem is with the loan system.

I read the Daily Mail and so what?... The Sun, The Times and all other Murdock papers are all behind the Tories.
Thank God there is a Daily Mail because it does hint something of the truth.
Because you buy that paper doesn't make you necessarily right wing.

Matter of fact the BBC and ITV have very prejudiced and bigoted shows with producers churning out PC propaganda in virtually every other programme including children's TV.

But the Labour education system is designed to bring everyone down to a level. So, if you are in anyway bright or talented that will be penalised by an education system that panders only to the stupid. Perhaps you believe that having 50% of children (that's the same as everyone with an IQ over 100) should all be going to University? Labour does. An IQ of 100 means that you are spot on average. It used to be that Universities were for those who were intelligent - not now. Even more stupidity - if your parents did send you to a private school and you were a high achiever you stand a very good chance of being refused a university place so that some ignorant chav gets it - simply because he's "underprivileged".

Once again, this isn't about doing the best for people - it's simply the politics of envy. It's a case of I haven't got it, and I want it, so I should have it. You've got it and you should give it to me - because I want it and that would be fair. That's the Labour ideal of life - do nothing and get everyone else to fund you. It's why Brown is desperately trying to hold on - he's done nothing good for the country and yet he wants us all to pay so that he can carry on.

What part of "Brown has, as Chancellor and Prime Minister, increased the debt of this country to such an extent that the international community now regards us a little better than third world" don't Labour supporters understand. How do they not understand that we have to pay back that debt? How do they not understand that you don't pay back a debt by borrowing more?

Brown could do something really positive for this country. Resign. Now. He's going to be thrown out as leader of the Labour party anyway.

Thats the most sensible thing I have read in the last few days. 2000% agree with everything you have just said there.
