I walked out on my call-centre job 2 weeks ago, disillusioned and totally down (it was basically chugging over the phone and soul destroying). So at the moment am frantically applying for anything and everything. 2 interviews this week and didnt hear back from 1 and was phoned this morning to say I had'nt got the other 1. Boo hoo, but its nice to be contacted. I have loads of life, people, admin skills etc but am wondering if at 51 I.m past it (hope not).
Trying really hard to be positive about stuff.
So thats me in a nutshell (partner is a joiner) and very supportive about me leaving work (thank heavens for that, worth his weight in gold). But I really, really need to get another job, no matter what it entails.

Welcome Fantasia, well done on leaving a job that you so didn't want to be doing. Now about this question of yours 'but am wondering if at 51 I.m past it (hope not). Absolutely not - positive thoughts please. I'm 55 and was celebrating earlier this week on this very thread as I went for an interview on Monday and got the job. Keep concentrating on what you can offer and how much experience you have and how lucky they would be to have you rather than worrying about your age. Go get that job and I hope you find something you enjoy soon. Teapot [another Scot]
  • Fantasia I agree with teapot past it at 51:eek: definitely not I am 51 and just starting a new business :T we are just reaching our prime :)

    WE TOTALLY ROCK!!!!!!!!

PS I've decided to put the books on Amazon today to start towards a reliable laptop fund so I will let you know when they are up there. So my request for the day please (and it won't eventake you 15 minutes I promise)

To anyone who bought and loved the books - could you create a short "Raving Fans" testimonial that I can use on Amazon etc.

Many many thanks for making my days so brilliant

    Memorygirl

Got confused and actually put a review on Amazon - you don't actually have to have bought the book from Amazon to do that. But thought it would help if people browsing see that it got 5 stars

you are def not past it!! i decided at 39 to change career and i started studying for being a counsellor. I'm in my 4th year and there were and are people older than me who started the course with me and some started the same road a year after me.

because i was on a low wage i managed to get funding for the Diploma i completed and i have the dreaded Student Finance for my degree, so don't be afraid to look into learning something completely new!! Go along to your local college or uni open day, they will be very helpful!!

Well I've been making earrings :) and have run out of beads again as I had more orderes after I had ordered the beads, so now i'm only 8 pairs of earrings behind :) apart from the bulk order obviously.

So I am having tea then ordering beads then packing up the orders i've done ready for the post office :)

I feel for you - I was always being told to be less intimidating to the juniors. I think in my case it started with someone who just didn't like me and stuck the knife in. But they had to have a cover for the backstabbing and implying it was my fault for being intimidating pressed the right buttons. It then became an accepted fact, that I had an intimidating manner and even when I got upward feedback from several other people saying they had liked working with me/I was always helpful and approachable etc I got the same comments from my boss trotted out on my appraisal year after year - be less intimidating to the juniors. It's often laziness - they feel they have to have a 'development point' to show they have done a 'constructive' appraisal

In the end I thought S*d it and ignored it.

Funny thing is at my previous place I was well liked and nobody thought I was scary. In fact on one occasion when the Powers That Be had done something which caused a bit of upset among all the staff, someone said to the Head of Department 'You've even upset Mary - and she's not exactly a lady wrestler!' I never lived that down.

scaredy_cat - thank you for that, I am in my 30ties and already feel old!!!! Been thinking about changing what I do for living but have not found the courage to do anything about it yet. Not sure what I could do and the cost scares me a lot, too. Been out of work for a few months now, it's absolutely dreadful. Also, our house's been on the market for 8 months now and no offers, it's so scary, if we don't sell like within a month or two, the bank will probably take it. Don't fancy ending up on the street at my age.

fantasia322 - keep going hun, I've applied for like zillions of jobs and mostly no replies but we have to keep going, I've been busy checking out all major jobs sites everyday. Good luck and may the fairy jobmother :) bring you a great job. x
