Geek Squad Insurance Claim rejected - advice pls?!

Hi all,

Short story is basically that my iphone was left in a taxi, and I've had to claim for it.
However Geek Squad have rejected the claim as "left unattended in a public place"

Anyone any advice for the appeal ?
I did ask at point of sale and was told it would cover loss on transport, plus a taxi hired

    Hi Brokencar,
Theres not a lot you can do as it states quite clearly on the policy guide what it doesn't cover ....
WHAT GEEK SQUAD INSURANCE DOESN'T COVER FOR MOBILES
    • For each claim that you make you must pay the excess shown on your insurance certificate.
    • Claims for loss are not covered by Geek Squad Mobile.
    • Claims for theft, loss or malicious damage unless you:
      • For theft or loss, notify your network provider within 24 hours of discovering the incident and have your mobile service line barred;
      • In all cases, tell the police within 48 hours of discovering the incident and get a crime/loss reference number.
    • Claims if your mobile is left unattended in a public place, or in a vehicle, unless the vehicle is securely locked and your mobile is placed out of view.
    • Claims if your mobile is dependent on a SIM card or is not connected to a network service provider at the time of the incident.
    • Claims outside the UK if you are abroad for a period of more than 60 consecutive days.
    • Your mobile phone accessories, unless they were purchased from The Carphone Warehouse and were lost, stolen or damaged at the same time as your mobile.

If you reported "leaving it in the Taxi" rather than saying "you don't know where it went missing" I doubt you will be able to claim ?

If the sales person lied about this when questioned about public transport then you can claim for being missold the contract. However it would be your word against theirs unless it was done via email in writing or maybe over the phone in which case you may be able to ask for a transcript of the phone call ?????

Other than that it's one to put down to experiance
It's not just about the money
  • Brought insurance after a very good sales pitch instore at the carphone warehouse. After 3 months the phone was stolen.Contacted the police, barred the phone and contacted the insurance company all in the same afternoon. This was on the 03.07.10. I was told on the phone they needed to liase with police and phone company and I would recieve a replacement /further information within 48 hours - 5 days later.....CLAIM DENIED.... within the letter it claimed that they had contacted phone company and they had said that I had 'not' barred phone within stated time. I contacted phone company they were surprised as they had not had any contact from 'Geek Squad' but on their records had noted that a thrid party who wouldn't identfiy themselves had attempted to gain my account information. I asked them to write so that I could argue the findings of their investigation. Sent the them proof and a letter of complaint - received nothing - e-mailed them again near the end of the month - asking for management to deal with my claim as I was really unhappy at the lack of contact and action. Was told that it had been agreed (apprantly they said they sent a letter out on the 23.07.10 - never received) and I had to pay £20 for the privilege of getting the phone!Due to their error I asked them to consider the fact that I was on contract and been without a phone for a month and I asked that they consider paying for the months contract and waiver the £20 fee. Not heard a dickie bird - they have awful customer service and real flaws in the way the complete their claims. I would not recommed this company to anyone - customer service can make or break a company! This one is a non-starter!!!
  • The phone was lost in a public place too!!
  • So glad that I haven't signed up for the geeksquad insurance. It was also sold to me as a great protection against loss.

Unfortunately I did lose my phone recently, but in a public place - A bus.

The lost and found of the bus didn't receive the phone, so of course that's costly. I believe I'll never keep my phone in an open pocket anymore - rather closed and just use a bluetooth headset to answer the phone quickly (which for me is the main reason for wanting it accessible.)

Anyway, claiming insurance with geek squad seems like a really bad experience so even on my new phone I won't take out their insurance.

    Thanks for the warning guys!

I've been paying for this 'Geek Squad' insurance for nearly 18 months and I didn't even know about it!!! I have no recollection of signing any deal or contract which states that I wanted this Geek Squad insurance. I've been paying £11.99 to a Direct Debit of 'Carphone Warehouse' thinking it was part of my contract, but after finally ringing them up to find out what it was, I found out it was the Geek Squad insurance!!!!!

Any ideas on how about finding out if I was sold this insurance without my knowledge as I honestly can't remember signing up for anything like this!!

    Thanks

When you buy a phone from a CPW company they give you 1 month free and if you don't cancel it they start charging for it.
It will have been there in print but not easily noticed ...thats what they rely on you missing it and they carry on charging for it

And anyone not checking their bank statements properly for 18 months obviously doesn't pay attention to the detail!

I was checking my bank statements, as previously stated - I just assumed it was part of the contract I had signed up for, not some bogus insurance I never agreed to.

That's what it looks like, I've found my order confirmation e-mail and it says:

    - 1 x Geek Squad (09) Mobile Max Band 5 1MF £0.00

Is there anything I can do if I actually didn't request this 1 month free insurance?

I've paid over £200 for something I never agreed to :(

Afraid not ...the only thing is to cancel the insurance and complain ... they might offer you something back although unlikely

And put it down to experiance of course
