Ah thanks rev_henry! Not sure about getting one for this car, but will most probably explore for the future... I think as something else has been taken since the plates, I am considering trading in for something else..
Thanks for the advice - I'll have a look on ebay!0 -
Are they nicking standard fitted items or shiny add-ons? magpies like shiny bling.
Bought a car a few years back & someone had fitted side indicators with shiny chrome surrounds. One day they vanished. Probably only 99p from ebay.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Few years ago someone stole my number plates.
I reported it to the cops and they took the details down over the phone. I got new plates made.
About a week later I had 2 cops at the door asking if i had bought petrol that night (I hadn't). They asked to check my car.
So we went to my car they checked the fuel gauge (I had between 1/2 and 3/4) and they asked what type of fuel it took (unleaded).
Turns out someone had stolen my plates, put them on another car (no idea what make/model) and filled their tank with fuel and drove off. Station attendant got the number plate and the cops traced it to me.
I didn't hear anything further once the cops left that night but I was SOOOOO glad I reported the plates stolen a few days earlier. Otherwise I could have been struggling to talk my way out of it or at the very least got a lecture for NOT reporting it when I should have.

Exactly my thoughts on reading the OP - with fuel prices increasing, more reason for the thieving muppets to target plates..."Part P" is not, and has never been, an accredited electrical qualification. It is a Building Regulation. No one can be "Part P qualified."

Our last car had the plates cloned. It happened some weeks after a break in on the car, nothing was stolen, just the glove box was opened and a few (copied) cds scattered over the seats, they didn't take the plates.
We got a call from a police station asking if my husband was still the owner of a VW Passat reg no xxxxx and that a car of the same make and model bearing our reg had been involved in a robbery.
The police knew it was nothing to do with us and it soon died away. Have since got rid of the car now though.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670 -
I think buying a private plate on the basis that it will cover you if the stolen plates end up on a car that commits an offence is a bit drastic and expensive. £250 may be cheap for the going rate of private plates, but it's still a lot of money to pay out just to cover yourself in this situation. I'd report it like others have said, then if anything happens you can refer the Police to that. Surely you're not likely to get charged for a crime that someone else comitted on a cloned car after you reported the plates stolen in the past.
Besides, anyone can just take a note of your registration number, then get the plates printed for about £15, without having to steal them from your car and would be more difficult and take longer for the Police to investigate because there would be no report of being stolen.
Also, if the thieves had any sense, they will probably come back and check in the future to see if your plates have changed, if new number then they will know to move onto the next car, or just take your new ones.0 -

They shouldn't be able to as you have to produce the V5 and some personal ID to get plates made up.0 -
