We had this happen to us. Our car got harvested for parts. Not number plates but car parts. They took a few bits and then a week later broke into the car and took lots more. We live in a quiet area and police thought the first theft was a trial run.

If your car is an old car and so hard to get parts for (as ours was) then this could be happening to you.

The number plate theft sounds more like someone cloning your car tho, not sure why they would take parts too.

Sorry, you wanted advice. My only advice is to look at where you park, consider additional security like a crooklock (if your car is old and more basic), check on the car during the evening more often, tell neighbours so they can keep an eye out and frankly just pray it stops!

Thanks - Gosh its amazing what people will do!!

Thanks for the advice - I lock the steering wheel but havent got a c lock. , I am considering getting something else.. have been thinking about it for months before this happened.. But this has made me consider it more I really would like to exit the car without being a sweaty mess in the summer months (no air con btw) :rotfl:

As people have said, you need to be VERY careful if you've had plates taken. Best advice is to buy yourself a cheap private plate, maybe off ebay, and put it on. This means if a cloned car with your plates goes past an ANPR camera, it will immediately be flagged up as dodgy because right now, it shouldn't be on any car, its waiting to go back on yours when you take the private plate off and sell it. If that made any sense at all?!

Talking of scum nicking dust caps (as if you do!!??), friend of mine originally from Hong Kong says that its fairly common over there for people to nick WIPER BLADES!

Thanks - I did consider getting a private plate, but couldnt find anything cheap that I liked, and actually didnt think they were cheap - I looked on DVLA didnt think of ebay - thanks

Yes do try ebay in that case, DVLA start at £250 right? Ebay if you're lucky you'll get something for £50. And tbh you'll probably always get your money back when you want to sell it.
ANPR = automatic number plate recognition. Most traffic police cars have them these days; they read number plates of all the cars that go past and check it against various databases, then flashes up an alarm for e.g. no insurance, no tax, connection to drugs, stolen, plate shouldn't exist etc etc. Very useful tool for the traffic police. Anyway, what I'm saying is it will be obvious the plates have been nicked if you put a private plate on your car.
