It does sound like you have installed Ubuntu with that and the aborted reinstall of XP you need to be very careful if you want to save the pictures.

Whilst many of the techniques suggested by others will work, and I do not mean this offensively, I am not sure with your technical ability it is worth risking another route.

Do you know of a good repair shop? if you do it may be a route but you need to be very clear in your instructions to them.

If not and you can wait untill the weekend I may be able to wiz over to Tameside, remove the disk and bring it home, recover the pictures and bring it back during next week.

I understand how important this is as my little one is 4 months and I would be gutted if I lost the pictures we have so far.

    - this input from Dime Bar [ and his recognition / analysis of the O/P's capability ] I do applaud :T

    - I deliberately directed you to a disk that could not be installed on your HDD, and cautioned ' It's important not to boot to your HDD '

    - if you have a working Hirens / and can boot from it / and it can see the hard drive / and all ~ some of your pics are not overwritten / and a USB stick you can have those pics safe in ten minutes.

Let me know .. .. .. if you need my help, otherwise Dime Bar's offer is ' above and beyond ' and a very very good outcome for you.

Thanks Richie but I'm gonna leave this to Dime Bar who has kindly offered. Why did no-one say at the start that I didn't know enough to do it lmao. No offence taken at all, just very grateful for all the help.

If DB is successful, I'll post a pic for you if this thread isn't too far gone :-)

    Thanks again xxx

Good luck with getting your pics back. When you see him/her ask Dime Bar to show you a good way to do back-ups of all your important stuff so you can avoid problems like this in future.
